Senate deal would block Pentagon from using coronavirus funds on border wall
Source: the hill.
By Rebecca Kheel - 03/25/20 02:39 PM EDT
The massive stimulus package awaiting a vote in the Senate would prohibit the Pentagon from shifting $10.5 billion in coronavirus funding to a counter-drug account it has been using to fund President Trumps southern border wall.
According to bill text released by the Senate Appropriations Committee, the bill would allow the Pentagon to transfer the coronavirus funds to other accounts except for Drug March Interdiction and Counter-Drug Activities, Defense.
A Democratic summary of the bill described the language as intended to prevent funds in this title from being diverted to build a wall on the southern border.
Earlier this year, the Pentagon transferred $3.8 billion from various weapons programs to the counter-drug fund to use to build the border wall.
Thats on top of $2.5 billion from counter-drug funds and $3.6 billion in military construction the Pentagon tapped last year to fund the wall.
The transfers infuriated Democrats -- and this year, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee -- who argued the Trump administration was usurping Congress power of the purse.

The Deadly Consequences Of Trumps Attacks On The Media In A Pandemic
Trump said the media is angry and is trying to inflame the coronavirus crisis. Plenty of people on social media agree with him.

By Amanda Terkel
In the midst of a global crisis, President Donald Trump continues to engage in one of his favorite petty pastimes: attacking the media.
Coming together is much harder when we have dishonest journalists.
I think it is a nasty question.
Thats CNN, fake news.
Trump has started doing regular briefings on the coronavirus, after weeks of insisting that it was not a big deal and would go away by April.
Hes misrepresented and overpromised on tools to help people with the crisis. He falsely claimed that the Food and Drug Administration had approved chloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, to treat coronavirus patients, and it would be available almost immediately. And he has exaggerated the availability of tests for people.
Trump has also regularly berated journalists and cast doubt on the credibility of their work. As recently as Monday, he took a gratuitous swipe at the media. He noted that many of the seats in the White House press briefing room were empty and asked Dr. Deborah Birx, the White Houses coronavirus response coordinator, about the angry media who usually fill the seats.
We have a lot of very angry media all around this room and they want one of these seats, but because of social distancing, we are keeping them empty and they are keeping them empty. Will there ever be a time when all of those really angry, angry people who dont like me much to start off with, but now they really dont like me will there ever be a time when these seats are full, like full to the brim like it used to be? he asked Birx.
A few hours later, he referred to The New York Times as Fake News! in a tweet..............................

Economists say Trump's coronavirus reopening plan is dead wrong
Source: ax
5 hours ago - Economy & Business
President Trump's proposal to get business around the country back open by Easter Sunday, April 12, will do more harm to the economy if the coronavirus outbreak has not been contained, economists say.
Why it matters: Such a plan would sow uncertainty in markets and among customers and business owners and make the recession longer and harsher.
Threat level: "We are still significantly behind the curve in containing coronavirus and reopening the economy for political expediency in the middle of a pandemic, to which no has has an immunity, is absolutely mindless," Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group, tells Axios.
"It will only delay a full economic recovery."
On the other side: A smattering of business owners and asset managers backed Trump's plan to push forward with lifting the lockdowns sooner than later.
David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue and WestJet, told Bloomberg that the suffering from a major economic downturn would outweigh the damage from the disease.
"If we go back to work and the disease continues to spread not only will people die and the 20% of our economy dedicated to health care be overwhelmed, but people won't have the confidence to resume normal activity.".......................................

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said Tuesday his office has begun a statewide crackdown on people and businesses engaged in pandemic profiteering, including a downtown St. Paul smoke shop accused of charging $79.99 for a 36-roll pack of toilet paper.
Also Tuesday, the attorney generals office sent a warning letter to Menards, putting the Eau Claire-based retailer on notice that the office has received and is actively investigating reports of alleged price-gouging of products at stores......................................
............................................According to the court filing, the office conducted a secret shopper investigation at the business located at 381 Minnesota St. and discovered it was selling toilet paper for $2.99 for one roll, $4.99 for two rolls and $79.99 for a 36-roll pack. The store was also allegedly selling one-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer for $4.99; packs of six nitrile exam gloves for $2.99; and 12 nitrile exam gloves for $4.99....................................
.....................................
The attorney generals office said it has received similar complaints about other cleaning supplies and face masks sold at Menards locations throughout Minnesota. The letter asks Menards to cooperate with the offices investigation by providing information and documentation about the price increases by March 27.
Last week, Michigans attorney general sent a cease and desist letter to the retailer after receiving 18 complaints from consumers about face masks, bleach and other products being sold at high prices...............................................

Falwell Misled Me on Reopening Liberty University, City Manager Says
Source: daily beast
The Lynchburg City manager said that the universitys president, Jerry Falwell, was not totally transparent with her about opening up the dorms again.
Updated Mar. 24, 2020 5:33PM ET / Published Mar. 24, 2020 4:16PM ET
When Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. announced on Monday that he was reopening the schools residence halls to students amid the coronavirus pandemic, he implied that he had received the blessing of officials in Lynchburg, Virginia, to do so.
They thanked us for making that decision, Falwell told the Liberty University News Service, describing a call to move classes online but also, in his words, to get his students back as soon as we canthe ones who want to come back.
In fact, Lynchburg city manager Bonnie Svrcek says that while she did thank Falwell for moving to online classrooms, she was led to believe that the school was also abandoning plans to invite students back into residence halls following spring break. Neither she nor Lynchburg Mayor Treney Tweedy said they signed off on Falwells decision to re-open Libertys dorms.
On Tuesday, Svrcek told The Daily Beast that Falwell was not totally transparent with her or Tweedy during an exchange on March 16 in which, according to Svrcek, Falwell told the two leaders that his school would move to an online platform.

Falwell Suggests to Fox That North Korea Created Coronavirus
That Falwell chose to go forward without the blessing of the city officials wasnt surprising. He is perhaps Donald Trumps most unapologetic ally in evangelical circles, and the president himself is eager for schools, businesses, and public establishments to reopen and get the country past its coronavirus-induced economic slump.

Conservatives Worry Too Much Coronavirus Relief Will Make People Lazy
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) says hes worried about incentivizing people to not show up for work.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee and is concerned about giving people too much relief from an economic downturn caused by the spread of the coronavirus.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is concerned that if the federal government steps in too much to help workers affected by the coronavirus crisis, it will make people lazy.
The House has passed legislation that would offer paid leave for some workers if they or their families are affected by COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
Johnson, in comments in USA Today on Monday, said he was worried about incentivizing people to not show up for work.
You have to think this thing through in terms of what are the unintended consequences of good intentions, he said.
A group of conservative economists put out a similar statement Tuesday, saying such benefits ― like allowing people to take time off, without penalty, if they are sick, so they dont die or infect others ― would discourage work..................

Like every other petty con man, from back-alley hustlers to Wall Street fraudsters, Donald Trump is a thief and he'll always be a thief. Now the president is clearly stealing from the George W. Bush playbook in one particularly awful way. Specifically, Trump appears to be desperately envious of Bush's approval polls after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to the point of recently declaring himself to be a war president in the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic. And it could absolutely get him re-elected.
As of the past several days, Trump's been marketing COVID-19 as an "invisible enemy." He can't stop repeating the bellicose platitude that America is at war against the virus, even though he spent the first two months of this catastrophe telling us it was no big deal.
Yet during the Sunday edition of the Trump Show, the president said, "In a true sense we're at war." On top of not understanding the definition of "war" or "true," Trump is also struggling to present himself with a patina of unity and cooperation (which he and his people routinely contradict with obnoxious cracks and tweets about his political opponents), while conspicuously thanking "first responders," as in the days and weeks following 9/11...........................................
...........In truth, this is a "war" in the same way Trump University was a "college."
Based on recent history alone, Trump knows that too many of us, the sucker demographic, will eat up his chocolate-fountain of nonsense with a giant Trump-branded ladle. It doesn't matter whether this is an actual war. Trump has to package himself as the bone-spurred generalissimo, wrapping himself in commander-in-chief powers, because while he understands very little about the so-called enemy, he at least understands that Americans tend to re-elect presidents who fight and win wars. ............................................

Trump-endorsed news outlet says it's God's "judgment" that a gay activist died from coronavirus

Richard Weber Jr., who was a member of the LGBT Bar Association of New York, passed away last week from coronavirus at age 57.
To most people, this is a tragedy. But to Rick Wiles of the website TruNews, its reason to celebrate.
Wiles made national headlines earlier this year when his website got White House press credentials. The site is known for its extreme anti-Semitism, homophobia, and disregard for facts.
And now Wiles said on his webcast that Webers death is part of Gods judgment because Weber fought for LGBTQ equality.
He was a senior lawyer for the LGBT Bar Association of New York, Wiles said. The lawyers who sue churches, the lawyers who sue ministries................................

Gallup: Trump job approval rating matches all-time high
https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/489285-gallup-trump-job-approval-rating-matches-all-time-high
By Jonathan Easley - 03/24/20 03:03 PM EDT
President Trumps job approval rating has jumped by 5 points in the latest Gallup survey, matching the high point of his presidency, as a majority of voters say they have a positive view of how the president has handled the coronavirus pandemic.
The new poll finds Trumps job approval rating at 49 percent, up from 44 percent in the same survey earlier this month. The 49 percent job approval rating is the high mark for Trump since he came into office. He first hit that mark in late January, shortly before he was acquitted by the Senate in his impeachment trial.
The presidents job approval rating has remained steady among Republicans (92 percent), but hes gained 8 points among independents (43 percent) and 6 points among Democrats (13 percent)...... ...........................
