The occupying Union army arrested much of the Maryland assembly to prevent secession. At that time, Maryland was blocking the rail lines to the North. The had passed a resolution protesting their occupation by Union troops before they were arrested by those troops.

Maryland mostly did not want to fight on either side. It remained a slave state throughly the war.

To this day, the state song, "Maryland, My Maryland", contains the term "Northern scum."

Someone from Maryland should explain further.
