Related: About this forumDanny Glover at the Sanders rally said Maryland seceded from the Union during the Civil War
With supporters like these...If you're going to come into Maryland at least brief your surrogates on the facts. And maybe look over their notes first.

but the Union wasn't buying their secession.
Therefore it wasn't a successful secession,
I was incorrect! Maryland didn't secede.

(3,040 posts)I am guessing you never watched any of the lethal weapon movies.
I was making fun of the catch phrase of Glover's character in the series and not you.
Sorry for the confusion.

(3,040 posts)Maryland was a unique mix of pro- slavery and abolitionist sentiments. They didn't secede but they were more aligned politically with the states rights, pro slavery mentality of the south.
But, let's consult the book of knowledge to understand the state's unique situation regarding such:

(6,115 posts)The occupying Union army arrested much of the Maryland assembly to prevent secession. At that time, Maryland was blocking the rail lines to the North. The had passed a resolution protesting their occupation by Union troops before they were arrested by those troops.
Maryland mostly did not want to fight on either side. It remained a slave state throughly the war.
To this day, the state song, "Maryland, My Maryland", contains the term "Northern scum."
Someone from Maryland should explain further.

(13,340 posts)Maryland to the south and east of Baltimore was pro secession. Western Maryland was pro- Union. Baltimore was mostly secessionist because the shippers benefited from the slave economy. However, far more volunteered to serve in the Union army than the Confederate.
