*NYT: Live Updates: Cargo Ship Hits Major Bridge in Baltimore, Triggering Collapse [View all]

A Singapore-flagged vessel struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Coast Guard said. Part of the span, which carries Interstate 695, has collapsed, the authorities said.

A cargo ship struck a bridge that crosses outer Baltimore Harbor early Tuesday, triggering a collapse, the authorities said.

The Coast Guard received a report of an impact at 1:27 a.m. Eastern time at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, said Matthew West, a petty officer first class for the Coast Guard in Baltimore.'>>>

The water in Baltimore Harbor is currently about 48 degrees Fahrenheit, or 9 degrees Celsius, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hypothermia can occur in any water temperature below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It’s still not clear how many people were on the bridge when the cargo ship made impact, or what happened to them. Johnny Olszewski Jr., the Baltimore County executive, said on social media that an emergency response was “ongoing.” He did not elaborate and could not be reached for comment.
