*NYT: Live Updates: Cargo Ship Hits Major Bridge in Baltimore, Triggering Collapse

A Singapore-flagged vessel struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Coast Guard said. Part of the span, which carries Interstate 695, has collapsed, the authorities said.

A cargo ship struck a bridge that crosses outer Baltimore Harbor early Tuesday, triggering a collapse, the authorities said.

The Coast Guard received a report of an impact at 1:27 a.m. Eastern time at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, said Matthew West, a petty officer first class for the Coast Guard in Baltimore.'>>>

The water in Baltimore Harbor is currently about 48 degrees Fahrenheit, or 9 degrees Celsius, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hypothermia can occur in any water temperature below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It’s still not clear how many people were on the bridge when the cargo ship made impact, or what happened to them. Johnny Olszewski Jr., the Baltimore County executive, said on social media that an emergency response was “ongoing.” He did not elaborate and could not be reached for comment.

'The owners of the Dali, a Singapore-flagged ship, confirmed in an emailed statement that the vessel had collided with one of the pillars of the Francis Scott Key Bridge around 1:30 a.m. Eastern. All crew members, including two pilots on board, were accounted for and there were no injuries on the ship, the statement said. The cause of the collision has yet to be determined, and the owners and the vessel's managers were cooperating with the authorities, according to the statement. . .

At the start of the video, the length of the ship you can see is a lot more than by the time of the collision - then, it's almost head on to where the camera is.

1:27am Eastern time is too early for the start of morning drive traffic, assuming that’s a major commuter thoroughfare. Hopefully there weren’t many motorists on the bridge when it gave way. But still awful and horrifying for an unlucky few.

I don’t know the roads of metropolitan Baltimore so I couldn’t guess about where the high-density traffic patterns are. Shit, what a calamity!

are related to rivers and creeks and harbors, complex navigations. Rte 695 is part of Baltimore 'beltway.'

The bridge is/was part of Interstate 695, an outer crossing of Baltimore Harbor.

Cartwright said it appeared there are “some cargo or retainers hanging from the bridge,” making conditions unsafe and unstable for emergency responders operating at the scene.

not as 'mass' as it might be.

MSNBC Way too Early on it now. and reported water 'freezing,' but likely not correct. First, prayers for any poor souls who were on the spans that collapsed. But in addition to replacement of the bridge, there will be a major impact on the Port of Baltimore if there is no other access. Could take many months, or longer, to reopen. It's a shame that pilot wasn't headed for the Kerch Bridge in Crimea instead.

a huge and widespread effect on commerce.

The Key Bridge carried more than 12.4 million commercial and passenger vehicles in 2023,
according to a Maryland state government report issued last November.

That had to intentional. 😳

What a disaster. My heart goes out to all who are dead, missing, and their families.

I hope the captain of that ship lived so we can find out what kind of murderous bug he had up his ass!

What a tragedy.
