I'm thinking "Ambassador Plenipotentiary." Sort of a SOS/Ambassador without the administrative duties, and not in the line of succession. As such, he would be pretty much the face of America abroad, able to go essentially anywhere and do whatever would be necessary to restore our standing with other countries, alliances, and rebuild our leadership in the world. PBO would be perfect for it, he has respect from the whole world that matters--and, boy, wouldn't it be a stick in the eye of a certain shitgibbon who shall remain nameless!
I don't think any former president would want a Cabinet position, or should be in one, for that matter. The line of succession would be one consideration.

OP
I only disagree because WHO he picks for VP is going to matter greatly in his getting elected.

Neal Katyal or Preet Bharara come to mind as excellent choices, plus they could hit the ground

Fortunately, he has a huge group of qualified candidates from which to make his choice.

AG is not in the top 10 of priorities to be solved. Environmental, nation defense and food.
