General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIn my opinion, Biden's most important cabinet choice is not going to be his pick for vice president.
It's who he picks for our knew AG. The next AG is going to be very busy if you know what I mean. Our next AG will have historic decisions to make.

(16,917 posts)The "call to duty" is one that is driven by many things: personal goals, career challenges, and a sense of honor/duty.
I'm torn between her being the VP nominee and the next AG. All that being said, she's a great senator and we'd miss her in the Senate.
I yield to greater minds to make the "final" choice!

(16,917 posts)Years ago I took part in a "leadership" program and one of our discussions was about where you could be most effective - have the most impact: you with an "intimate/small" group (think manager/teacher) or as a "leader of leaders" (think CEO/principal).
We soon realized that while working with the small group (manager/teacher) had its advantages in seeing results directly in front of you, it was the "leader of leaders" that could create the most positive force for change.
Yes, Senator Harris was and could still be a very positive force for California, but, if so chosen (and she so desired), she could be an even greater force for the entire country!
Congrats for your own positive interactions with her - everybody should be so lucky!!

(3,055 posts)I've been torn for a while between wanting her on the ticket as VP, or AG in the Biden Adminstration. She's be fantastic at both, and I'd love to see her on a debate stage with Pence. But he has a lot of strong, smart women to choose from for VP, I can't even begin to imagine a better AG. Except for Adam Schiff. Damn. Now I'm back to square one.

(9,657 posts)All of them good candidates, providing those vacating office leave them in good hands.
I favor Sally Yates though, if for no other reason than to complete her mission and career by bringing back honor to the DoJ.

(2,963 posts)...the Dems will just let everything slide. Remember when Karl Rove outted a CIA agent...was called before Congress and blew it all off? A clear act of treason (the outing) in my mind and no charges brought. One could go on and on about things like Wall Street not being prosecuted for all the shenanigans that lead to the mortgage meltdown and the Great Recession. Its like the Dems don't want to dwell on the past and just want to start clean on their own new agenda but it weakens the democracy and the rule of law when there is essentially no hard accountability for acts like these. This de facto situation where if you are high enough up their really are no long term consequences other than a brief period of public hand wringing that blows over and on your way you go.

(16,917 posts)Joe has already said that he will NOT pardon IQ45. That's a good start.
We had screw-ups in the past:
Gerald Ford pardoning Nixon - "We need to move forward."
Nancy Palosi - "Impeachment is off the table." (yeah, the one time she broke my heart)
It will take a ton of effort to clean up the mess that IQ45 has made - not to mention the layers of obstruction that the RepubliCon party has built into current procedures. It will not be done in 2 years - not even 4.
It is critical that we get the correct people in the correct positions to lead this challenge and fight - and it will be a fight.

(2,963 posts)...Trump and McConnell have stacked the deck on judges including the Supreme Court. The one thing that Hilary's loss really cost and will be hard to undo in the short term is all the judgeships the Reps have been able to fill with their own. As you say, it will take years and that assumes the Dems get something like a governing majority on the legislative side. Here's praying!!!

(58,785 posts)have been getting more important with each administration. Biden's looking for someone to take on a very heavy portfolio as an assistant president, and I can't guess what that portfolio will include.
Our next AG's most immediately important job will be to restore and strengthen the legal and traditional principles, practices and constraints on the DoJ itself, including all the various high-power divisions and offices. And the renegades in the FBI.
And of course our Democratic senate and house caucuses have passed big ethical reforms packages just waiting for us to elect a Democratic majority. The final legislation will absolutely include stronger protections against renegades and criminals who get control of government.
Just checked again: 161 days to Nov 3, 223 to swearing in a new congress, 240 to a new president. It's coming!
MyOwnPeace
(16,917 posts)THAT is the most pressing issue going into a new administration. IQ45 has had the help of Moscow Mitch to destroy that constitutional concept - the ignored subpoenas, the claims of "executive privilege" - and the failure of the Senate to do its duties according to the Constitution (see: Merrick Garland).
This erosion of the "balance of power" is the most threatening thing to the true democracy that we claim to have.
It MUST be stopped - NOW!

(1,086 posts)All across the cabinet. They will be the ones bringing stuff to the AG.
But indeed the VP choice will be important, Biden clearly sees that choice as someone who can help carry the burden. But in the way he did. That is carrying out the objectives and not actually setting them.

(6,455 posts)I want an AG who has an edge to her. Obama is a tender-hearted guy. I want someone who will absolutely stick it to the criminal GOP without compromise or free form interpretation of the law. They did it, they own it.
I'd like more Obama family photos with a big grin on Obama's face, thank you very much. Let's get a Doberman in there that the GOP will be afraid of and unable to deal with.

(23,152 posts)I'm thinking "Ambassador Plenipotentiary." Sort of a SOS/Ambassador without the administrative duties, and not in the line of succession. As such, he would be pretty much the face of America abroad, able to go essentially anywhere and do whatever would be necessary to restore our standing with other countries, alliances, and rebuild our leadership in the world. PBO would be perfect for it, he has respect from the whole world that matters--and, boy, wouldn't it be a stick in the eye of a certain shitgibbon who shall remain nameless!
I don't think any former president would want a Cabinet position, or should be in one, for that matter. The line of succession would be one consideration.

Honestly, if I were Kamala Harris and was not chosen for V.P., I am not so sure I'd give up my Senate seat for a possible 4-year job. I would much rather he look for good, solid Democrats who have served but are not currently in the House or Senate.
Someone who went to law school like Stacey Abrams
