PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced during a Wednesday press conference that the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” executive order will be modified and extended until May 15.

Beginning on May 4, business involving the sale of goods which were not previously classified as essential may return to selling their goods in a limited capacity, according to Ducey’s amended executive order.

Such businesses can begin selling their goods via drive-thru, pick up, delivery or window service.

Effective May 8, those businesses can begin offering their goods via in-store purchases as long as social distancing protocols requiring six feet of space between patrons is enforced.

Esper Taps Funds From Counter-Russia Programs for Border Wall[

Portion of $545 million would be directed away from Europe
Lawmakers have criticized similar Pentagon efforts in past

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper is directing Pentagon budget planners to defer $545 million worth of construction projects -- many in Europe meant to counter Russian aggression -- to pay for President Donald Trump’s border wall with Mexico.

In a memo sent Monday to the Pentagon’s comptroller and other officials, Esper lists several projects in Norway, Germany, Spain and elsewhere totaling more than $200 million from which he says funds can be redirected.

Those projects are all part of the European Deterrence Initiative designed to bolster allies and undermine Russia’s growing influence on the continent. The projects include infrastructure for military aircraft, fuel, munitions and cargo.

Esper has the authority to redirect funds from both domestic and foreign construction programs because Trump has declared a national emergency in order to spur funding for one of his top campaign priorities -- the southwestern border wall.

Similar moves by Esper and his predecessors in the Trump administration have enraged members of Congress from both parties, who are particularly wary of seeing funding cut for construction projects in their districts or states. And Esper’s initiative would appear to conflict with the National Defense Strategy, which prioritizes “great power competition” with Russia and China.

For only $125, you can remember the deaths of friends and family forever.

By Bil Browning Wednesday, April 29, 2020 2 Comments

The White House Gift Shop is allowing online pre-orders for a coronavirus commemorative coin that costs $125. The website claims that 20 percent of proceeds will be “donated each day to U.S. hospitals including Johns Hopkins for its COVID-19 Coordination and Trackins [sic].”

The coin features the names of President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin, Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams, Coronavirus Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx, and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci. It has a graphic of the COVID-19 virus on one side and the presidential podium on the other.

The coronavirus coin is the 11th in their “Historic Moments” collection. Other coins in the collection include one bearing Trump’s face and deemed a symbol of “the genius level thinking & proven successes of President Donald J. Trump.”..................

The White House Gift Shop is a controversial business that is only tangentially related to the actual White House. At one point it was affiliated with the Secret Service, but the trademark is held by a private individual, Anthony Giannini.

Giannini describes himself as non-partisan, but admits he is a Trump supporter..............................

Not 'a great moment in American leadership:' Romney criticizes government response to coronavirus

Source: msn.com

Colby Itkowitz 3 hrs ago

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) ..............................

Romney mostly kept his criticisms broad, avoiding attacking President Trump directly, though he took a few swipes at the president’s management style during an event with Georgetown University students via video chat on Tuesday night.

“The speed of our response looked slow compared to other people. That first phase will not stand out as a great moment in American leadership,” Romney said, referring to the onset of the coronavirus outbreak, adding, “We didn’t look real strong, and that’s kind of an understatement.”
.................
................

While Romney said explicitly, “I’m not blaming this administration,” he suggested ways he’d be doing things differently if it were him in the Oval Office, primarily coordinating resources and response through the federal government.

“It’s hard to say to all 50 governors, you guys all do your thing,” Romney said. “I think the federal coordination has been less than my personal style.”
.................................

Romney also seemed to criticize Trump’s advisers, saying he would be surrounding himself with “real experts in crisis management … people who have dealt with this more than I have.”

He added, “The key to leadership is recognizing you’re not the smartest guy in the room.”

The race between Democrat Kweisi Mfume and Republican Kimberly Klacik is to fill the reminder of the term of Elijah Cummings who died last fall. The balloting was conducted almost entirely by mail (with limited day of, in-person voting) and is one of the few non-primary election campaigns conducted during Covid-19 restrictions.

Polls close at 8pm and we expect first results shortly after that.

MD-07 is a heavily Democratic leaning district and Mfume is considered the favorite to wing.

Alaska school board removes 'The Great Gatsby,' 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' from curriculum ov

Source: the hill

By Aris Folley - 04/28/20 08:41 PM EDT
..................

A school board in Matanuska-Susitna, Alaska, has voted to remove famous written works like Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” from the curriculum for elective high school english courses, citing their “controversial” content.

...................
.........................

A flier was reportedly given to members of the school board by the school district that laid out summaries of each of the books and listed reasons for which each of the works were being challenged.

The flier said Angelou’s book had been challenged because it contained “sexually explicit material, such as the sexual abuse the author suffered as a child, and its ‘antiwhite’ messaging.”

“The Great Gatsby” was challenged due to its “language and sexual references,” the flier stated, and the “Invisible Man” was challenged due to content containing “language, rape and incest.”

................
..............

..................

Dianne K. Shibe, who serves as president of the Mat-Su Education Association teachers union, told NBC News that many in the local community were surprised by the vote by the school board.

However, she said the move is “not set in stone” and that the union will be calling on the board to revisit their vote.

.................................

....................

But, since that vote, a local bookstore owner told the news agency that copies of those books from flying off her shelves.

...............................

“Our biggest outpouring of support are people buying the books and donating them or leaving them to us to distribute for free,” she added.

Pentagon pulls money from overseas projects to pay for border wall

Source: POLITICO

The move drew an angry response from Democrats, who say the administration is "trampling" on Congress' power of the purse.

04/28/2020 04:27 PM EDT

Defense Secretary Mark Esper is restoring more than half a billion dollars in funding for military construction projects in the U.S. that were put on hold to help fund President Donald Trump's border wall, and instead will take money from projects that are primarily overseas.

The move, which is laid out in a memo dated Monday and obtained by POLITICO, drew an angry response from Democrats, who say the administration is "trampling" on Congress' power of the purse.

Altogether, $545.5 million in previously withheld funds, all for projects in the U.S. with award dates in 2020, will be allowed to move forward.

"To enable the execution of certain projects scheduled for award in calendar year 2020, I direct you to release funding associated with 22 currently deferred projects within the United States totaling $545.526 million," Esper wrote in the memo to acting Pentagon Comptroller Elaine McCusker.

Esper removed 22 projects from the list of border-related deferrals, all of which have award dates in 2020. Of these, $160 million is for two projects at West Point, where Trump is slated to speak at commencement ceremonies. Another $62.6 million is for a middle school project at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, where Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is up for reelection in November.

To fill the hole left by restoring the $545.5 million, Esper proposes in his memo to substitute a new set of about 19 projects totaling an equal amount. Most of these projects are overseas and were funded by Congress from fiscal 2020 Overseas Contingency Operations appropriations outside the military base budget. The projects are in countries such as Germany, Japan, Norway, Spain and Jordan................................
