Clinton: 'Please do not take medical advice from a man who looked directly at a solar eclipse'

Source: the hill

By Morgan Gstalter - 03/24/20 12:41 PM EDT

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday knocked President Trump’s response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, tweeting: “Please do not take medical advice from a man who looked directly at a solar eclipse.”

The retort from Trump’s 2016 White House rival makes reference to Trump temporarily taking off his protective glasses during an August 2017 eclipse and looking up at the sky.

Clinton has been vocal about her opposition to the Trump administration’s response to the global outbreak, spelling out several policy solutions she said should be immediately implemented by the White House.

Earlier this month, she tweeted that the federal government should have implemented actions such as quarantines and federally mandated paid sick leave.......................

Trump Obsesses Over Flu Deaths, Attacks Cuomo in Softball Fox News Chat

Source: daily beast

The president insisted on downplaying the coronavirus by comparing it to the seasonal flu, and Fox’s hosts and medical experts acted
more as sycophants than interlocutors.

“I watched Governor Cuomo and he was very nice,” the president said of the New York governor’s press conference, which preceded the Fox News town hall, before attacking Cuomo for “complaining” about receiving only 3,000 ventilators from the Federal Emergency Management Agency despite needing, in his estimation, at least 30,000 of the devices.

“He had a choice. He had a chance,” the president continued. “He refused to order 15,000 ventilators,” Trump said, pulling out a printout of an article from far-right blog The Gateway Pundit and paraphrasing the headline: “It says that he didn’t buy the ventilators in 2015 for a pandemic, established death panels and lotteries instead.”

“I’m not blaming him or anything else,” Trump then pivoted, “but he shouldn’t be talking about us. He’s supposed to be buying his own ventilators. We are going to help.” He suggested Cuomo has not been grateful enough for the president’s help: “We are working very, very hard for the people of New York. We are working a lot with him. Then I watch him on this show complaining.”

Throughout the chat with Fox News hosts Bill Hemmer and Harris Faulkner, Trump repeatedly pivoted to an earlier talking point about the seasonal flu being just as bad or worse than COVID-19. Trump obsessively referenced the annual death count from influenza.

“We lose thousands and thousands of people a year to the flu. We don’t turn the country off. Every year. When I heard the number—you know, we averaged 37,000 people a year. Can you believe that?” the president grumbled at one point. “This year we are having a bad flu season.”

After reviewing over 1,000 pages of email between Fox News employees and employees at the Departments of Homeland Security, Education and Agriculture, The Hollywood Reporter unearthed a 2018 correspondence where a Fox producer promised the press secretary for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos a softball interview if she came on host Maria Bartiromo’s show.

“Ps remember any question she doesn’t feel comfortable answering — she can choose to not answer and pivot the topic — and Maria is seasoned enough to understand and move on. … So no worries on that front. This will be an easy interview and enjoyable,” the Fox producer, who is now no longer with the network, wrote.

“This should be totally fine,” the press secretary responded......................

By Kaelan Deese - 03/24/20 03:14 PM EDT

The U.S. Navy said three sailors on board the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Philippine Sea have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The report marks the first incident of the virus aboard a U.S. warship, according to Fox News.

U.S. officials said the affected sailors have been placed in quarantine and will be flown from the ship Tuesday.

The ship holds a crew of 5,000 sailors as well as dozens of fighter jets and other types of aircraft.

A Navy official said they would proceed as usual following the removal of the sailors who tested positive, saying, "You have to continue the mission."

'Release the ventilators!' Gov. Cuomo publicly begs Trump to stop hoarding 20,000 ventilators

Source: raw story

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Tuesday pleaded with the president of the United States to release 20,000 ventilators that have been stockpiled by the federal government.

During his daily pandemic briefing, Cuomo said that New York needs an additional 30,000 ventilators due to the spike in coronavirus cases.

“The federal government has 20,000 ventilators, or thereabouts, in the federal stockpile,” Cuomo explained. “Secretary [Alex Azar] runs an agency called HHS — Health and Human Services. I asked the secretary, ‘Look at the first word in the title of the agency you run. It is health. Your first priority is health. You have 20,000 ventilators in the stockpile. Release the ventilators to New York.'”..........................................

There remains little evidence that the president’s travel restrictions have made any meaningful difference on coronavirus cases. Moreover, lack of testing and mixed messaging from the White House on proper social distancing protocols have continued to frustrate the health care system’s efforts to contain the outbreak.

Coronavirus found among workers at facilities for migrant children: report

Source: the hill

By John Bowden - 03/23/20 08:18 PM EDT

Three workers at two facilities in New York currently involved in housing undocumented migrant children have reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) said Monday that the workers are employed at two unidentified migrant detention facilities, which, it added, have consulted local health officials about "appropriate quarantine measures" for the workers, according to CBS News.

A dozen migrant children at the facilities have also been tested for the virus, according to CBS, and none have tested positive so far. Five have tested negative, and the rest are awaiting results.

One foster parent helping care for migrant children in Washington state has also tested positive for the disease, according to ORR. Washington state and New York have seen some of the highest levels of the coronavirus in the U.S. as officials have struggled in recent weeks to prevent the virus from spreading.

In New York, children receiving medical care while being housed in detention facilities no longer leave the facility to see a doctor due to new "tele-health" services reportedly implemented in the state, as well as in California.

AP fact check: GM and Ford are not yet making ventilators.--as Trump claimed!!

Another day, another LIE from our #LiarInChief!!

Trump: GM and Ford are making ventilators "right now."

AP fact check: GM and Ford are not yet making ventilators.

https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/1242096010454863873?s=20

AP FACT CHECK: Trump hype on auto industry and ventilators

DETROIT (AP) — President Donald Trump is falsely asserting how quickly automakers including GM, Ford and Tesla can manufacture ventilators to help fill an acute U.S. shortage of the medical equipment for coronavirus patients.

Ford and GM have yet to start production, and it would take them months, if not longer, to begin production, if it’s even possible.

A look at the claim:

TRUMP: “Ford, General Motors and Tesla are being given the go ahead to make ventilators and other metal products, FAST! @fema Go for it auto execs, lets see how good you are?” — tweet Sunday.

TRUMP, on addressing a shortage of ventilators: “General Motors, Ford, so many companies — I had three calls yesterday directly, without having to institute like: `You will do this’ — these companies are making them right now.” — briefing Saturday.

THE FACTS: No automaker is anywhere close to making medical gear such as ventilators and remain months away — if not longer. Nor do the car companies need the president’s permission to move forward.

Neither GM or Ford is building ventilators at present, while Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted Friday that his company was “working on ventilators” but he didn’t specify how long it might take. His tweets also questioned the need and said it couldn’t be done immediately.

Unless automakers can move with unprecedented speed, redirecting plants to make completely different products will take a long time — possibly too long to help with medical gear shortages.

Trump thinks of his Press Conferences as his Pep Election Rallies--so he will continue with

them--as he says he misses his rallies.

There was a short discussion of this on msnbc just a bit ago. Have to admit, I had not thought of that.

And yes, They must boost his ego. Each one seems to get longer where Trump blabs and blabs all about his polls, complains and cry. etc etc.
And all who are standing on stage--all brag up how wonderful he is doing. over and over. Yup=bigly ego boost for the crybaby

Republicans: It's time to ban the Chinese government from Twitter for its 'whitewash' of coronavirus history
David Choi 23 hours ago

Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin in a letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey urged that the Chinese government should be banned from the platform.
The two Republicans stressed that the Chinese government was using the social media platform to "disseminate propaganda" amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"While the coronavirus pandemic is afflicting families, governments, and markets around the world, the Chinese Communist Party is waging a massive propaganda campaign to rewrite the history of COVID-19 and whitewash the Party's lies to the Chinese people and the world," the GOP senators said.

...............

...................

Both pointed to the Communist Party of China's (CCP) obfuscation over the origins of the coronavirus in recent weeks, when Chinese senior officials alleged without evidence that the US Army "brought" the virus to their country.
............................................

Similar to other authoritarian countries like Iran, Twitter is officially blocked in China. In 2019, Twitter removed nearly 4,800 accounts, over 1,600 of which sent out 2 million tweets that frequently shared news content "with an angle that benefited the diplomatic and geostrategic views of the Iranian state."

Republican wants China banned from Twitter for the exact thing Donald Trump is doing now

WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 21: Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) heads into a Republican caucus lunch meeting at the U.S. Capitol December 21, 2018 in Washington, DC. The U.S. Senate will meet Friday to consider a budget bill passed Thursday by the House of Representatives that would fund the federal government and includes more than $500 million for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Senate is unlikely to pass the bill with the wall funding, moving the government closer to a partial shut down just days before the Christmas holiday. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

I’ll just drop this clip of Donald Trump saying, "I have seen that where people actually liked, but I didn't feel different. I've always known this is a real—this is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.” I’ll also drop this story from a little over two weeks before said video, where Trump calls the coronavirus “the new hoax” being pushed by the Democratic Party and deep state.

China’s handling of COVID-19 was clearly problematic. The country, very well known for its authoritarian control over media and public information, is reinventing history to mitigate their terrible handling of the public health crisis. This is a fact. Also a fact: Our current government, under Donald Trump et al., is attempting to reinvent history to mitigate its terrible handling of the public health crisis.

Back when the Senate finally passed some legislation for coronavirus relief, Sen. Sasse joined Republican Sens. Jim Inhofe, Ron Johnson, James Lankford, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Tim Scott, and Marsha Blackburn in voting against the package. And Ben Sasse is historically craven, gaslighting American women everywhere during his vote to install beer lover Brett Kavanaugh into the highest court in the land.

Luckily for the GOP, they’ve figured out the best way to help Americans under economic distress is to follow Trump and the GOP leadership as it blows the racist dog whistle of xenophobia and blames others for its own impotency.
