Williamson County elections judge quits after confrontation with early voter

A Williamson County election supervisor and judge has resigned from her position after shouting at and berating a voter last week at a polling location in Round Rock, according to Williamson County elections officials.

Williamson County Elections Administrator Chris Davis said the incident happened during early voting on Friday at the J.B. & Hallie Jester Annex.

Davis said the incident involved a woman who was registered to vote in Williamson County, but had moved to Travis County, and seemed to be confused about where and how she could cast her vote.

Davis said the woman initially went to vote in Travis County but was turned away and told to go to Williamson county.

Travis County auditor who uncovered tax office fraud resigns

Travis County Auditor Nicki Riley, whose review of the county’s tax office prompted an investigation that uncovered suspicion of fraudulent activity and led to the arrest of seven people this year, has resigned to pursue other professional interests.

Riley told the American-Statesman on Monday that she made the decision last week and informed her bosses, the county’s 19 district court judges, she will step down once they find her replacement. She has worked in the office for 16 years and has served as the county’s chief financial officer for the past six.

“I’m ready to move onto something different,” Riley said. “I’m just burned out of that position. I’m looking into other opportunities that I’m able to do.”

State District Judge Lora Livingston confirmed Riley’s departure in an email on Monday.

Federal judge blocks questioning of top state EB-5 officials, for now

BURLINGTON — A federal judge has blocked an attorney for a group of EB-5 investors from questioning former state officials who oversaw the scandal-plagued immigrant investment program in Vermont — at least for now.

Judge Christina Reiss said Russell Barr, the Stowe lawyer who brought suit on behalf of a handful of investors from China, must first take the deposition of Shen Jianming, an immigration attorney accused of taking advantage of foreign investors in a kickback scheme.

Shen is accused of taking $1.25 million in kickbacks in return for bringing foreign investors to the Jay Peak projects.

Depending on what Shen says in his deposition, the judge may allow Barr to depose former state officials.

NASA conducting 'quiet sonic boom' tests in Galveston over the next two weeks

NASA has begun a series of quiet supersonic research flights off the Texas Gulf Coast near Galveston to test how the community responds to the noise from a new experimental aircraft that could eventually cut commercial flight times by half.

The space agency on Monday began testing "quiet sonic booms" near the island community using F/A-18 jets as part of its Quiet Supersonic Flights 2018, or QSF18, campaign. The jets are flying over the Gulf of Mexico in a unique maneuver as part of a two-week project to assess public reactions to the noise.

"QSF18 is a big step in NASA's efforts to understand what is required for acceptable supersonic overland flight," said Peter Coen, NASA's commercial supersonic technology project manager, in a statement.

"This is the first time in decades that we have reached out to a large community as part of our supersonic research," Coen said. "NASA has performed similar tests at our Armstrong Flight Research Center, using similar sounds created by the same F/A-18. We've measured the noise levels and the impact on structures, as well as surveyed people for annoyance, to make certain that these tests are safe and well-planned. We greatly appreciate Galveston's interest and support."

Poll worker directs racist language at a north Houston voter

A poll worker shouted racist statements at a Houston woman after confusion over her voter registration.

When Rolanda Anthony tried to vote at her polling location at Iglesia Bautista Libre in north Houston, a poll worker said there was an issue with her address in the system. She was told she had to fill out a form to fix it.

That's when Juanita Barnes, the assistant election judge, ran over and told her it was illegal for her to try to change her address on Election Day.

The two argued.

"If I were to wear my blackface make up, maybe you would understand what I'm telling you," Barnes said to Anthony. Barnes is white and Anthony is black.

FBI investigating after 911 caller threatened to 'kill everyone inside' Arlington mosque during event

While a group of Arlington police officers was inside the Dar El-Eman Islamic Center giving a presentation on law enforcement Saturday night, more officers were outside responding to a 911 caller who claimed to have a pipe bomb, police said.

The threat was called in about 9:30 p.m. from a blocked number, police spokesman Lt. Christopher Cook said. The caller claimed to have a bomb and threatened to "kill everyone inside" the mosque.

Patrol officers and fire investigators who deal with suspicious devices responded to the mosque, where dozens of congregants were gathered for a family-night event with Arlington police.

A search of the area determined the threat was not credible, but police are working to track down who made the call. Because it came from a blocked number, Cook said, it probably will be difficult to find the caller.

Dallas jailers ordered transgender woman to show her genitals, lawsuit says

A transgender woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Dallas County alleging jailers ordered her to show her genitalia to them so they could determine her sex.

Valerie Jackson, 32, had been arrested in November 2016 after she left a gun in her purse when she went through security at Dallas Love Field. A grand jury has since declined to indict her on the weapons charge.

Her lawsuit, filed Friday, alleges that she was harassed and humiliated at the jail and that her constitutional rights were violated.

Dallas County placed her in danger by housing her with men, the lawsuit says. Jackson was male at birth but legally changed her gender to female and is identified in court records as a woman.
