ancianita's JournalProtecting Civil Liberties During a Public Health Crisis
EFF has long advocated against digital surveillance by government and corporations of our movements, health, and personal relationships, and against big data systems that can turn our lives into open books...
Some use of big data may now be warranted as public health officials work to contain COVID-19. But it must be medically necessary, as determined by public health experts;
any new processing of personal data must be proportionate to the actual need;
people must not be scrutinized because of their nationality or other demographic factors;
and any new government powers must expire when the disease is contained.

Six million Australians to get immediate $750 coronavirus stimulus payments
Sydney Morning Herald
Up to 6.5 million people on government benefits, including pensioners, the unemployed and those on family welfare payments will get up to $750 each in cash payments in an attempt to drive consumers back to the shops. The stimulus payments will cost $4.6 billion and will be paid into bank accounts from March 31.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said casual workers, who may miss shifts because they contract coronavirus or are asked to self isolate, will have access to sickness payments through the welfare system and waiting times abolished.

I'm happy for this. My son's family live there, including our elderly in-laws.
As our son says, "Everyone benefits when we look after each other. Simple, right? Not sure why this sentiment has gone missing in the USA."
Illinois governor orders schools closed due to coronavirus
Source: Charlotte Observer
CHICAGO
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday ordered the closing of every school in the state until March 30 starting Tuesday amid concerns over the spread of coronavirus.
Other states and large cities shut down schools this week over COVID-19 concerns, but officials in Illinois and Chicago resisted until Friday. Pritzker announced his decision in Chicago where more than 355,000 public school students will be affected. Statewide, nearly 2 million students will not be returning to the classroom.
Pritzker acknowledged that the decision will deeply affect students who receive meals at school and parents or family members who are unable to work from home. The Democrat, who has been particularly critical of the federal government's response to the spread of COVID-19 cases, said he still believes closing schools is necessary to limit the virus' spread.
Illinois officials on Friday also reported 14 additional cases of people who had tested positive for the virus, bringing the state's total number of COVID-19 cases to 46. State officials are focused on trying to limit transmission in Illinois and hope that broader actions will help, said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.

45 praises WALMART as patriotic?
Trump's praise of Walmart during his overlong bullshit press conference is disgusting, imo.
I hope Joe is aware.
For all Americans know, much of what the Walmart family imports from China is contaminated by coronavirus. If its products are not, why are we told to sanitize surfaces, wear rubber gloves in pubic settings, along with washing hands? Coronavirus can exist on inanimate surfaces for up to nine days, according to medical experts.
Not one question was directed to the Walmart spokesman about this.
Drive through testing? That's the least Walmart can do.
Giving Walmart parking lots to the poor to park in? They've already done that for years.
For all we know, Walmarts are becoming coronavirus hotspots across this country.
I'd be surprised if Walmart stores are not exposure sites.

Ever Heard of the Medical Reserve Corps?
Wow. This is very cool. Just thought I'd share.
To help stressed medical people, or panicky people, or bridge this period of "containment," otherwise, federal inaction time, to the time when some responsible action is taken, or checks are cut, this looks like what those of us who are not vulnerable can do for folks who are.
I'm at a vulnerable age, but I'm going to see what I can do to connect with them, anyway.

The MRC consists of medical and non-medical volunteers who contribute to local health initiatives, such as activities meeting the Surgeon General's [1] priorities for public health, and supplement existing response capabilities in time of emergency.
The MRC provides the structure necessary to pre-identify, credential, train, and activate medical and public health volunteers.
The Medical Reserve Corps Program (MRC PO) is the national "clearinghouse for information and guidance to help communities establish, implement, and sustain MRC units nationwide."
As of December 31, 2017, there are 937 local MRC units and 194,475 volunteers.[1] MRC units are present in all 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Guam, Palau, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
