Federal judge issues restraining order against Trump's federal agents in Portland

Tonight's restraining order is nothing short of a win for the rule of law.

BREAKING: A federal court just issued a restraining order on the federal agents in Portland, Oregon.

We said we would deploy the full firepower of the ACLU in this fight to save our democracy — and we meant it.

A federal judge on Thursday issued a 14-day order, temporarily barring federal officers from using force, threats and dispersal orders against journalists or legal observers documenting the daily demonstrations in downtown Portland.

During the hearing, U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon quoted case law from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, saying, “When wrongdoing is underway, officials have great incentive to blindfold the eyes of the Fourth Estate. The free press is the guardian of the public interest, and the judiciary is the guardian of the press.”

What's Next for Republicans If Trump Loses?

Jonathan Bernstein: “After a round of recriminations, the next two years are reasonably predictable: Republicans would react to unified Democratic government exactly the way they did in 1993 and 2009 — and arguably in 1977 and 1961 as well. They’d mount as much obstruction as they could in Congress, while charging the incoming administration with malfeasance. Outside of Washington, expect more Tea Party-type rallies, blaming Democrats for the high levels of unemployment they inherited and claiming their plans are socialist overreach. Expect partisans to rile up resentment the way they did in those years as well… There might be some talk about the long-term demographic challenges the party faces, but most will soon conclude that their main mistake was not being conservative enough. There will be no serious discussions within the party of the real problem: They can’t govern.”

“The reason this is easy to predict is because, as the party sees it, the Bob Dole Republicans in 1993-1994 and the Mitch McConnell Republicans in 2009-2010 were totally successful. Compromise is a trap, in this view; the way to recover is to oppose the Democrats flat-out.”

Whatever it takes to drive the casino indexes upward.

“Media Continues to Misreport Unemployment: 31.8 Million People on State & Federal Unemployment Insurance. Week 18 of U.S. Labor Market Collapse”

If you read this morning or heard on the radio that 16.2 million people were claiming unemployment insurance – the “continued claims” – and you thought that there were only 16.2 million people who claimed unemployment benefits, you fell victim to lazy misreporting in the media, by reporters or bots that didn’t read the Labor Department’s press release beyond the second paragraph.

Those 16.2 million were only the claims under state programs, and do not include the claims under federal programs. All combined, there were 31.8 million people on the unemployment rolls. That’s what the Labor Department reported further down in the press release.

There is a huge difference between 16.2 million and 31.8 million unemployed people

The ‘reporters’ aren’t being lazy, they are doing as they are ordered. Anything that doesn’t fit the “blue skies and sunshine forever” narrative is to be either buried deep into the articles, or left out. The ‘bots are doing as they are programmed, with the programming incorporating the same directive as that given the reporters. Whatever it takes to drive the casino indexes upward.

All IMO, of course…

Pelosi, Schumer reject McConnell's 'ununified, unserious and unsatisfactory' COVID-19 bill

Joan McCarter
Daily Kos Staff

............

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rejected the Republicans initial effort to provide coronavirus relief. Responding to reports that Sen. Mitch McConnell and leadership were going to push various elements through as individual appropriations because of an inability to get their own Republicans on board with a larger plan, the Democratic leaders are united in rejecting that approach.

That includes not taking whatever Republicans will offer to avoid the impending cliff of both the rent moratorium and expanded unemployment insurance ending. "This is a package. We cannot piecemeal this," Pelosi said. Schumer added that Democrats would not "take care of one portion of suffering people and leave everyone else hanging." On the floor Thursday morning, Schumer blasted Republicans for being "so divided, so disorganized and so unprepared that they have to struggle to draft even a partisan proposal within their own conference, before they talk to a single Democrat. […] It appears the Republican legislative response to covid is ununified, unserious and unsatisfactory.”

And boy, are Republicans in disarray. “What in the hell are we doing?” Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas railed in a luncheon Tuesday with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, during which they attempted to woo the Republican senators. Cruz argued that there shouldn't be more relief funding, that they should be forcing reopening instead despite the fact that his state is among the worst for new infections and deaths. “I just walked out of a meeting that could be sort of a Bernie bros, progressive caucus,” Sen. Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, whined afterwards. “I’m alarmed that we’re talking about spending another trillion dollars we don’t have.” Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, whose state is currently dying of coronavirus, has also said he'd block the aid because "Democrats just want to spend money." And Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin "just [doesn't] see the need for it."

For those keeping count at home, that's four out of the 53 Republicans in the Senate. McConnell needs a minimum of 50 to do anything, absent Democratic votes. Which he's not getting........

If you need a good laugh at Donald's expense today - watch this from 1990

If we still had Helen Thomas sitting in the briefing room and Barbara Walters in an interviewer’s chair, it might be/already have been easier to unseat Donald Trump.

https://twitter.com/mel_marie01/status/1286167231596867584?s=20

Transcript:

TRUMP: “I’ve never seen press reporting as I have with regard to me, and I hope the general public understands how inherently dishonest the press in this country is.”

WALTERS: “As a member of the press let me try to clear up some of the things that you say aren’t true. ‘My bankers and I worked out a terrific deal that allows me to come out stronger than ever. I see the deal as a great victory.’ Being on the verge of bankruptcy, being bailed out by the banks? [Crosstalk] Skating on thin ice and almost drowning? That’s a businessman to be admired?”

TRUMP: “You say on the verge of bankruptcy, Barbara, and you talk on the verge and you listen to what people say …”

WALTERS: “I talked to your bankers.”

TRUMP: Well, that’s fine. And what did they say? I mean, you know, depending on which banker you’re talking to, what did they say?

WALTERS: “Several.”

[...]

TRUMP: “Well, I don’t know what the bankers have said. The Plaza is a very valuable property. Everybody told me, oh, you paid too much, you paid too much, now they’re all saying what a great deal he made on the Plaza.”

WALTERS: “No they’re not.”

Barr Lied - said today there have been 200 arrests in past 2 wks, actually there has been ONE.

Wow. Barr says today there have been 200 arrests in the past two weeks. KC says the real number is more like one. Then DOJ backtracks and says 200 is since December and includes local arrests. What the hell is going on at DOJ?

Barr says feds arrested 200 people in Operation Legend. KC officials can’t confirm it

But the announcement came just two days after the first charge was announced in connection with Operation Legend, billed as a federal law enforcement effort against violent crime. And officials in Kansas City said they had no knowledge of any number arrests close to Barr’s figure.

The only charges announced in the operation so far were against Monty W. Ray, 20, of Kansas City, who was arrested Friday by an Independence officer and an agent with the U.S. Marshals Service. Ray was charged Monday in federal court with being an unlawful drug user in possession of firearms, according to a criminal complaint.

When asked just before 11 a.m. Tuesday if there had been any additional arrests since Monty Ray, Don Ledford, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas City, said “No, not that I’m aware of.”

Trump praises Dr. Deborah Birx for her "tremendous substance" and "amazing style"

"She walks into the room, and she can take a scarf and do 15 things with it."
