Yes, Bernie will be on the receiving end of attacks.
However.
Deep down, I'm certain that if they had their way, they would like Hillary to be the nominee. She's the one they can use to fire their base up just by mentioning her name. She's the one who can be counted upon to NOT fire up her own base. She's the one who, should she win, will ensure the continuation of politics as usual - which they all want.
So, I agree with you that we should not allow the Republicans to define who our nominee will be; but although there are some little-r republicans (who are probably closer to the center than most) who like Bernie, the big-R Republican Party fears him and would prefer not to have to run against him.
