is a myth that has taken hold on the left, also on the populist right, who seem to have forgotten history.
The wwc abandoned Dems over civil rights well before '92, embracing the free-trading union-busting Reagan, and turning their noses up at anti-trade pro-union Dems like Mondale and Dukakis.
Clintonism embraced trade from a centrist position, i.e. fair trade, recognizing the global reality of the economy.
It is technology and automation more than any other factor which has (and will continue to) erode manufacturing jobs, which eventually will leave places like China and come back to the US, but robots will be doing the jobs.
