If one defines "material" as "money" (and the trappings of it), then this is where one constituency will split off from others that don't necessarily cling to the belief that "money buys happiness" and "well-being". And this should not be construed to mean that it won't help. It most certainly will. But it is not necessarily the "be-all end-all" of many of our lives in a cultural sense, and shouldn't be pushed as the "solution" for all of our problems.
THIS is what folks refuse to "get".
I.e., there is quite a bit of objectification that occurs among certain groups in this country that runs counter to those who look at and live their lives more subjectively. And these different cultural worldviews and insistence on there being a "universal" one defined by one group for others, is what tends to cause all sorts of conflict within the Democratic Party.
