Bernie Sanders and the rural poor in cold environs [View all]
I grew up poor in Northwest Wisconsin, one year mom and dad bought coal for the furnace instead of oil because oil was too expensive...the snow around the house was covered with coal dust...it was both unhealthy and aesthetically horrible mom and dad recognized how horrible it was so we ended up cutting our own wood where we could find it...as far as attending school we had to walk about a mile to the end of the driveway for the school bus...very tough as an 8 year old in -20 degree weather...but we all did it. We had a pump house for our water and in the winter we surrounded it with hay bales and frozen cow manure to keep the water from freezing (it didn't always work)...
I remember many times having to go to the neighbors to borrow hot water to try to thaw the pump...we also had to haul water bucket by bucket to the barn and the sheep shed to feed the few livestock we had... since we did not have running water out there. I also remember cleaning the barn, we couldn't afford a wheelbarrow...seriously...we couldn't afford a wheelbarrow...so me and my brothers hauled out cow manure fork by fork...shovel by shovel...we called our manure pile "shit mountain" and we planted a flag on it (I have pictures)
Me and my five brothers grew up proud democratic socialists (one brother had Down Syndrome which made my parents life even more challenging and even more committed to Democratic Socialism).
So you know what...angry Roy Ellefson does not need any urban upper middle class liberals 'hillarysplaining" to me why I should not support Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primaries. My demographics are the demographics of FDR, HHH, MLK and the true progressives...so blow it out your arses (that's the Irish in me).
