The Egyptians believed a snake that threatened existence itself fought to swallow the boat (the solar barque ) Ra traveled in across the sky.

In the evening a blood red sunset meant the snake who wanted to swallow the sun and end existence itself has been defeated cut into pieces by Sekhmet and Set.
The red is the snakes blood.
