And they couldn't have cast the two protagonists better: Hopkins, as the gruff but astute Benedict; and Pryce as the somewhat provincial Bergoglio.

Their garden conversation really captured the contest between the 'judgmental' church and the understanding church.

For Pryce, it was the second time portraying an Argentine-born head of state: his first, of course, was as populist President Juan Perón in Evita.
