I don't expect the utopian vision to be possible. It may happen in a few hundred years, but it won't happen in my lifetime or for a number of generations. In the future economic growth is going to continue and the best we can do is "bend the curve" so we don't obliterate the planet in the process.
I do think that current nuclear energy is fine if done properly. Fusion would however be safer. With economic growth energy needs are going to continue to rise quite dramatically around the world and the only current technology capable of scaling up is fossil fuels which is really not good.
