There are now practical industrial superconductors, high efficiency RF plasma microwave generators, and advanced plasma computational simulations. The situation is much different than it was 20 years ago. Because of the development path of computers we think that technology advances much faster than it really does. Most other technologies have a much slower development speed and it may be that it has just taken this long to develop the required technology.
Edit: meant to type "superconductor", not semiconductor...
