The movie cultural event of the year arrives this weekend with the opening of two highly anticipated films: Barbie and Oppenheimer. Movie fans have dubbed the dual opening as Barbenheimer given the rarity of two high profile movies opening on the same weekend in the summer.
Barbie, from acclaimed director Greta Gerwig, is a lighthearted film for almost all ages starring Margot Robbie as a real-life version of the famous doll.
Oppenheimer, from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, is serious biopic about the man (Robert Oppenheimer) who developed the first atomic bomb with Cillian Murphy playing the title role.
Thematically, the two films could not be more different and apparently are targeting completely different movie going audiences. However, the contrast of the two films has prompted fans to commit to seeing a Barbenheimer double feature by watching both films back to back or on the same day. Both films are being well-received by critics with Barbie sitting at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and Oppenheimer at 95%. It's still early so those scores are likely to change.
Will you be participating in a Barbenheimer double feature this weekend? I have my tickets for Friday mostly because the two films have been atop my summer watch list.
