(36,437 posts)Strachwitz owns the whole enchilada, the years are all wrong, and Down Home Music only sells recordings. I'm thinking your lady friend might have been talking about another music store in El Cerrito.
Down Home Music was established in 1976 by Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz as a (brick & mortar) retail outlet for Roots music releases from various labels throughout the world.
Curiously, Chris paid cash for the brick and mortar building from the profit from one song he 'owned': I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag. Chris Strachwitz ultimately gave the rights back to Country Joe McDonald, and ironically saved Country Joe a boatload of money in legal expenses over the nasty copyright lawsuit.
On Edit: Chase down This Ain't No Mouse Music (it's on Netflix); Chris tells the whole story of Country Joe McDonald and how he ended up owning the funny little song.
