5. It was pretty easy getting it all together except the birth certificate

I thought I had one, but it was something the hospital issued, not the state.

Decided to try anyway, went to the DMV (in Minnesota)

Anyway it wasn't accepted (and I wasn't too surprised having carefully read what was required, but it was a chance to check out my other documents and I needed to renew my regular drivers license within 3 weeks).

I had to write the state of California (where I was born) and send them $25 and of course fill out a long form -- their website says it takes 3 to 4 weeks. It took 31 days (4.4 weeks) from when I snail mailed it to when it came in the snail mail. So anyway people should allow time for this.

I'm planning a trip to the DMV next week to hopefully get it done.

I haven't been on a plane since 2004, but I need to be ready anyway for any number of circumstances that I might need to go, and in a hurry.
