Twenty-first century mass media is one of the most awesomely powerful things in human history, and right now a large sector of it is focused on seeing just how far into right-wing terrorist land they can push their audience.

These people are closed off from all reality-based information streams and have been relentlessly radicalized and hardened in their extremism by their alternate-fact information streams. They know Trump is a crook and they don't care; to them, that's "strength." They also know that their alternative facts don't line up with objective reality, and they don't care because there is strength in numbers. As with religion, it becomes "real" if enough people believe it. So they will confidently say that the Russia scandal is fake news, that Obama was born in Kenya, and that we found WMDs in Iraq, and when someone points out that isn't true, they will collectively sneer and say "look at the ratings."
