It used to be that abortion was such a major sin that it couldn't be forgiven in confession by an ordinary priest. (I don't remember the details but I think it would have had to be approved by a Bishop.) Pope Francis has announced that it can be forgiven by a priest in confession -- which puts it on a par with all the other sins a priest could absolve (and since Catholics believe all humans have flaws, they always have something to confess in Confession -- such as losing one's temper, or failing to share our belongings with the poor; or "coveting" our neighbor's things, etc.)
