(8,859 posts)This is a major role of the Democratic party; to preserve the interests of those who are weak in political and economic power.
Democrats be they Warner or Clinton or POTUS Obama that suggest budget compromises that weaken or otherwise cut social security are following GOP not Democratic solutions to budget issues.
The monies can be found buy raising SS income caps, cutting military spending, raising taxes on the top 20% in wealth and income, less corporate tax loopholes, and a financial transaction tax on Wall Street.
Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction plan is failure and should never have been suggested much less supported by Democrats.
Democrats should seek to expand and strengthen social security where the elders are co0mfortable and the young are secure in their own future with social security.
Any talk of privatizing social security is also GOP policy and should never be considered a policy by a Democrat.
