On Thursday I had coffee with a friend of mine who's on a county commission with me (that is, we met there and became friends). She's a small-businesswoman who was joining me in being beyond appalled at the show the GOP just put on. Then she said she's still registered Republican, but has not voted for any of them in so many years she can't remember the last time.

It's so important for the health of our political system for our opposite number to be rational, of good will, and have a broad center. My friend is part of that broad center -- but it's gone from the GOP and so is she.

Thanks for this article ashling.
