Clinton wanted John Podesta, an influential Democratic Party stalwart who served as President Bill Clinton's chief of staff, to succeed Holbrooke. But Podesta was too influential (including with the president) and too high-profile, and that would have made it difficult for the White House to manage him and snatch AfPak policy. The White House vetoed the choice."
