Tomorrow March 8 is International Women's Day [View all]

First celebrated in 1908, the event has been held worldwide every year since then. This year's theme is "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress"

Historical Note:
On March 8, 1917 (February 23, 1917 of the old Russian calendar), the women of Petrograd were inspired by the holiday to begin a street demonstration to protest food shortages and the brutal working conditions. The following day a continuation of the demonstration attracted even more women. Soon the men of the city, observing the courage and boldness of the women, began to join them. Although no one realized it at the time, this was the start of the Russian revolution. Within a few days the czarist government would be overthrown.
