Navalny gave himself up to be killed. [View all]
To all the Christians here on DU and everywhere,
A man who was persecuted saw the bigger picture and gave himself over to his tormentors. He suffered and died, but believed his suffering and death would help deliver resolve to his followers/countrymen. It wasn't a protest because his audience was taken from him. The few words he was able to deliver were of hope for the future and resignation to the forces he hoped to unmask for all to see.
Navalny had much support around the world and from many within his own country. He had a loving family and had already suffered an assassination attempt because of the threat he posed. Instead of leaning on his relative celebrity for a brighter future for himself, he willingly submitted to injustice and mistreatment.
He did it to prove a point: that no matter how strong 'the devil'--our humanity can not be taken away. He urged others to believe in the cause of democracy, humanity, and equality; to believe in their own power, and the promise of a better tomorrow for future generations.
I don't believe in God or that Jesus was meant to deliver salvation. I do believe that a very real man, a human being with great understanding, allowed himself to suffer so that others could see the truth: a maniacal tyrant, with no saturation point for satisfaction, was and is still a threat to all of us, and that we had better do what we must to shut him down.
Our future depends on it.
