The threat of hell is to convince the followers to believe that Jesus died for their sins. Remember, God didn't give the 10 Commandments to Christians. He gave them to Moses, a Jew.

Our prisons are full of believers, mostly Christian. Read up on family annihilator John List. He was a deeply religious man and the shame of losing his job, and the fact he didn't think his family was pious ENOUGH, drove him to murder his mother, wife and three children. But he didn't kill himself because that sin would be unforgivable. So he left a letter to his pastor about why he had killed them and went undercover for DECADES. When they finally caught him and sent him to prison, he said he had no regrets because he knew he would see his family in heaven.
