(64 posts)Trump has influence in lots of places. Could he not raise enough doubt in enough states so that neither candidate will get a clear majority?
Lots of people fear waiting in line on Election Day, so there is likely to be a lot more mail-in voting than in the past. But the Postal Service is in crisis -- who knows if those ballots will get delivered. I'm sure there are lots more excuses that can be drummed up to make sure the vote count looks, and maybe is, illegitimate. States whose leadership is loyal to Trump may contribute to making those things happen and then may use them as an excuse not to certify their votes.
A couple of reasons to hope:
* Deep down perhaps Trumpers in leadership positions value democracy more than Trumpism. Sometimes I think they have to come around because they're not idiots and even setting aside what will happen to the rest of us, they must know that Trump will sell out on them when doing so is convenient for him. Other times I think some of these people are idiots all the way through. Herman Cain died from exposure at a Trump rally.
* The states in which Trump can most easily create doubt are the ones where he has the most influence -- states that probably would vote for him anyway. He has less influence in the blue states. That said, he can still mess with the Postal Service in pretty much any state.
The whole thing is a nail biter. Trump, I believe, will use any means necessary to stay in office. Throwing the election result into chaos may be one of his strategies.
