Remember those children kidnapped at the border? [View all]

How quickly we are conned into forgetting each atrocity.

How quickly we can be made to ignore yesterday's horrors because of today's new horrors.

Umm, you do remember that hundreds (thousands?) of children were kidnapped at the Mexican border, and that many are now in limbo? And that many may never see their parent or guardian ever again? And that this is one of the most horrible things that can happen to human beings and, by any standard, is a crime against humanity?

Okay, old news. Actually given today's Republican Party and their orange king, everything is "old news." Because every day, they commit a new outrage. And the result is that whatever they did yesterday is "old news."

But in the meantime, children are living in camps with horrible conditions. And many of their parents have been deported. Which means there are many children and parents who may fruitlessly spend their entire lives searching for each other.

Today, our focus is on the Kavanaugh prick. And no matter what comes out of any investigation, the Republicans will probably put this disgraceful, outrageous turd on the Supreme Court if they calculate that the electoral price to them won't be too high. -- That means too high for them. -- As for the rest of America? Fuck 'em.

But what about those kidnapped kids? They've fallen off the front pages of newspapers and the lead stories on TV. And if you're not in the headlines, you might as well not exist. You're just another "story of the day." So as far as the news is concerned it's a story for page 12 in a newspaper, or a brief mention in the last moment of some TV "news" program. Some kids, along with their parents or guardians, are just some "brown people" who were worth major coverage, sometime back when.

This is how a somewhat moral society falls apart. This is how it ends. A new outrage every day until everyone becomes numb.

The fascists know exactly what they're doing to us. And far too many of us are clueless.

"This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper." T.S. Eliot
