I want to do a post about Billy Joel. I have been a fan almost all my life. That's partly an accident of time, I'm 61

And I became aware of music during Bill's Prime.
The fact that Elton john was big back then helps too.
Piano is a support instrument in popular music now, but between Billy, Elton and Supertramp, it was the lead instrument for plenty of hits back in the 70s through the early 80s

Let's not forget thet Billy was a bad bad man as well, which is one reason I still prattle on about him.

I mean JFC listen to the man sing and play. He plays counter to his vocals like it's no big thing. Except it is a thing.

Of course this song remains my Billy Joel gold standard song

Bob Dylan covers are some of my very favorite songs. Every popular genre has taken from Bob's discography

Today's lunch time play list features Bob songs done up Rhythm & Blues style, Starting with Taj Mahal

That last one was straight up Blues, but Isaac Hayes has the Rhythm

The Holmes Brothers doing a very churched up take on "Wallflower"

Bettye LeVette does the very best version of every Bob song she covers, so she gets two songs to close us out

Tennessee GOP blocks recognition for black Grammy winning artist, approves white artist's award

I swear these assholes just don't even care to pretend anymore,

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/02/17/tennesee-resolution-grammys-allison-russell/

At the end of Monday’s session, Jones, the representative who introduced the resolutions honoring Russell and Paramore, tried to address his colleagues about the former being blocked.

“Black History Month is happening every day, and just a few minutes ago there was a resolution to honor someone who is making Black history,” he said before House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R) interrupted to say the time was to be used for announcements, not engaging in debate.

Jones tried again. “The announcement is to announce that there are people in our midst who are making Black history, and I want to honor them during this Black History Month, including those who are here in Nashville and in our state of Tennessee who are making Black history every day and deserve to be honored.

“I would like to announce that it’s concerning that this body chooses to denigrate, or to — ” he said, before Sexton cut off his mic, apologized and moved on.

Gather around, it's story time. Here's the tale of how I became a fan of an obscure band, Budgie

1st, let me do a bit of scene setting.
As was normal then (it was the mid 70s), I was a teen living through a split custody divorce settlement.
In my case that meant Summers in San Antonio, and I spent the school year in SW PA.
What a freaking rip-off - swamp ass all summer. Frostbite all winter.
OK. Told you that, to tell you this:
Budgie was popular in San Antonio back then. They made barely a ripple in other markets but had a following in SE Texas.
Turns out that a popular DJ loved the Budgies, and he played the band often. The band wound up with a fanbase who pushed the other R&R stations to program Budgies songs too.
Obviously, it never happened in other markets, but I was a Budgie fan and I always enjoyed sharing the band.
Still do obviously

Metallica covered this on and it was the closest Budgie ever got to a hit in the US

This was another influential track

They were heavy as hell but were very progressive too. A sick 8 to12 minute jam session track was pretty standard on Budgie albums throughout their career. Like this one (It's long AF, you were warned)

Just listen to that last track again. HOLY SHIT
