Mass Shootings in the U.S. Vs in Australia

A short video contrasting the responses of young Americans versus young Australians when asked, "When was the last mass shooting?"

In 1996, 12 days after the Port Arthur Massacre took the lives of 35 victims, Australia passed its National Firearms Act (NFA), which has dramatically reduced the number of mass shootings. In fact, if one defines "mass shooting" as an incident in which a shooter killed four or more victims, the number of mass shootings in Australia since passage of the NFA is just one. You read that correctly: one mass shooting in twenty years. On September 9, 2014, Geoff Hunt of Lockhart, New South Wales, killed his wife and three children before turning the gun on himself. Total fatalities: 5.

A five-fatality mass shooting in the United States would hardly register as a blip.

White Supremacist YouTube Channel Promotes Donald Trump

Yesterday, I made a post in this forum about a new YouTube channel named Evalion (pron. ee-VAL-yun). Ostensibly the creation of an angelic-voiced 18-year-old girl, the channel has posted youth-oriented, repugnant videos promoting racism and homophobia, praising Hitler, and denying the Holocaust. (If you missed that post, you can see it here.)

At this point, I'm convinced the channel is a production of the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, or some other White supremacist organizations. The channel appears to be well-funded, has a Twitter component, and is growing rapidly. It's also promoting Donald Trump. You can see Trump's image in the channel's graphic header. In the video below, Evalion, the host, sports a Donald Trump knock-off hat.

The Takeaways
1. White supremacist groups have become very media savvy and are using YouTube content written in the "lonelygirl15" style (remember her?) to reach out to teenagers.
2. The groups are reveling in the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency and are redoubling their efforts to recruit.
3. The growth of these white supremacist groups is occurring at an alarming pace. The Evalion channel is currently gaining about 700-800 subscribers every day.

Here's the video. If you watch it, you'll see how the creators have managed to lace in a lot of poisonous racist hate speech among the usual teenage vlog content. Trigger alert: The video contains racial slurs, denial of the Holocaust, and white supremacist ideology.

Youth-Targeted Racist YouTube Channel... You Have to See It to Believe It

Despite all the Hillary-vs-Bernie arguing that's been going on, I think there are still a few things all DU'ers can agree on, one of them being this: There are groups out there pushing nightmarish agendas--groups so perverse and twisted, all this Hillary/Bernie stuff looks like child's play.

Case in point: While doing some research on the Nazis and the Holocaust, I came across a relatively new YouTube channel called Evalion. Ostensibly the creation of an angelic-voiced 18-year-old girl, the channel has posted youth-oriented, repugnant videos promoting racism and homophobia, praising Hitler, and denying the Holocaust. The content is so warped as to be jaw-dropping. Joseph Goebbels had nothing on this girl.

But to clarify, I don't for one minute believe the channel is actually the product of an 18-year-old girl. The amount of content, and the highly-developed, twisted world view, strongly suggest to me that the content is being fed to her by a larger organization. Some pathological hate group has figured out that their content will be more palatable, and will gain a larger audience, if voiced by a young woman.

I'm surprised YouTube is allowing this content. It's so twisted, so hateful, and so dangerous that it makes me think we ought to adopt some of the legislation Germany uses to prevent this kind of twisted hate speech.

If you can stomach it, here are a couple of the videos. Be warned, this is nasty stuff. I'm torn about posting them, but I'm proceeding on the theory that it's better to know this sinister, youth-targeted content is out there than to be ignorant of it.

1. The channel's trailer.

2. One of her most repugnant videos: "How to Identify a Jew."

7 Other Nations That Prove Just How Absurd U.S. Elections Really Are

This isn't a new article (first published May 19, 2015), but it's worth reading now as the U.S. election cycle goes into high gear. Using seven examples from abroad, the author shows that, when it comes to elections, the United States has a lot of room for improvement. --Old Crow

Is there a greater example of American excess than the presidential campaign process?

From the formation of exploratory committees until the inauguration of the next president, the American election frenzy lasts about two years, a vast majority of which is spent talking about little of substance. Along the way, the U.S. easily outspends every other country in the world, a trend that has only been accelerated by the gutting of restrictions on corporate contributions to campaigns in recent years. Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign could cost up to $2 billion, according to early estimates.

What's even worse is that the exceptional amount of time and money doesn't produce an engaging democratic process. The U.S. ranks near the bottom in terms of voter participation when compared with other developed nations. Issues like obstacles to voter registration and the ability to simply get to the polls without missing work contribute to strikingly low turnout in the world's most powerful democracy.

Your Handy Guide To Tonight's Primary Results

Due to the wonders of modern technology, there is no need to stay up late or wait until morning to find out who's won tonight's Democratic primaries!

Here's how it works: States that use electronic voting with no paper trail will be won by Hillary Clinton. In those states, her win will deviate in her favor from the exit polls, often beyond the margin of error. States that use paper ballots will be won by Bernie Sanders, with results that are consistent with the exit polls.

Ready? Here we go! In alphabetical order:

CONNECTICUT
Voting method: Paper ballot
Result: Sanders winning with 50% reporting

DELAWARE
Voting method: Electronic voting
Result: Clinton winning with 99% reporting

MARYLAND
Voting method: Paper ballot
Result: Clinton winning with 21% reporting (the exception that proves the rule?)

PENNSYLVANIA
Voting method: Mixed: paper ballots/electronic voting
Result: Clinton winning with 48% reporting

RHODE ISLAND
Voting method: Paper ballot
Result: Sanders winning with 91% reporting

How Paper Balloting Was Sabotaged in America

If you've clicked this post, you probably already know that electronic voting machines are a disastrously bad idea. (If you don't, I encourage you to visit this recent post.) What you may be wondering is, How did we ever become so dependent on them, and so quickly?

In the segment below, taken from a "Dan Rather Reports" episode back in 2007, Rather suggests a disturbing possibility. It appears that in order to get America to rush headlong into electronic voting, the Florida "Hanging Chads" fiasco was deliberately created.

Why Electronic Voting Is a BAD Idea - Computerphile

Not a new video (first published in December 2014), but worth viewing now if you're interested in the integrity of U.S. elections (both the primaries and the general).
