The richest 10 percent of the population in Norway controls 21.2 percent of the entire nation’s wealth. The poorest 10 percent of the population controls only 3.8 percent of the whole country’s wealth.

Our research and that of other scientists suggests that the vagus nerve may be a physiological system that supports caretaking and altruism. We have found that activation of the vagus nerve is associated with feelings of compassion and the ethical intuition that humans from different social groups (even adversarial ones) share a common humanity. People who have high vagus nerve activation in a resting state, we have found, are prone to feeling emotions that promote altruism—compassion, gratitude, love, happiness. Arizona State University psychologist Nancy Eisenberg has found that children with elevated vagal tone (high baseline vagus nerve activity) are more cooperative and likely to give. This area of study is the beginning of a fascinating new argument about altruism—that a branch of our nervous system evolved to support such behavior.

NCAI's Long Standing Opposition to Harmful "Indian" Sports Mascots

As the nation’s oldest, largest, and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native advocacy organization, NCAI has long held a clear position against derogatory and harmful stereotypes of Native people—including sports mascots—in media and popular culture. In 1968 NCAI launched a campaign to address stereotypes of Native people in popular culture and media, as well as in sports. Since this effort began, there has been a great deal of progress made and support to end the era of harmful "Indian" mascots in sports.

The couple made headlines in 1996 when Stone was forced to resign as a consultant on Bob Dole’s campaign after the National Enquirer ran a story that the pair had posted swinger ads looking for male partners.

“Hot, insatiable lady and her handsome body builder husband, experienced swingers, seek similar couples or exceptional muscular well-[endowed], single men,” an ad in Swing Fever magazine read.

Stone initially denied the claims but in a 2008 interview with The New Yorker, admitted that he and Betran had posted the ads.

“When that whole thing hit the fan in 1996, the reason I gave a blanket denial was that my grandparents were still alive. I’m not guilty of hypocrisy,” he said.
