Casey DeSantis, a Mother Pence for contemporary Republicans

I know how badly Mother Pence wanted to be First Lady. And, since the chances of that happening are probably around ZERO, fundamentalists everywhere have a slim second chance with CASEY DESANTIS, a woman who makes Amy "Carrie's Mom" Coney Barrett look tame on the fundie scale.

You've seen the ad, I'm sure. Casey believes that God...you know him, big guy with a booming voice and a Billy Gibbons beard...created the UNIVERSE and everything in it in six days, took a day off to rest, and spent the EIGHTH DAY creating a mighty warrior, RON.

And, in case you missed it, here's the backstory.

‘And on the 8th Day’: DeSantis Rolls Out Cringe Ad Saying He Was Sent by God

In a dizzying, perplexing campaign ad rolled out by Ron DeSantis on Friday, the Florida guv appears to brand himself as the state’s messiah—created and sent by God to be a “fighter” for freedom. And while the ad sounds like a cringe SNL skit, it’s not—DeSantis’ wife, Casey DeSantis, tweeted it on Friday with the message: “I love you, Ron. On behalf of millions of people, never stop fighting for freedom.” The ad, completely in black-and-white for dramatic effect, plays a montage of photos of DeSantis smiling, laughing, and apparently looking a mother in the eye to tell her she can “hold the hand of an aging parent taking their breath for the last time.” Those able to make it through the entire video are left with this quote from the impassioned voiceover: “God said I need a family man. A man who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply with smiling eyes when his daughter says, she wants to spend her life doing what dad does. So God made a fighter.”

ICYMI: Good WaPo article on Trump's 2024 wet dream for 24/7 Martial Law

Trump touts authoritarian vision for second term: ‘I am your justice’

The former president is proposing deploying the military domestically, purging the federal workforce and building futuristic cities from scratch

Mandatory stop-and-frisk. Deploying the military to fight street crime, break up gangs and deport immigrants. Purging the federal workforce and charging leakers.

Former president Donald Trump has steadily begun outlining his vision for a second-term agenda, focusing on unfinished business from his time in the White House and an expansive vision for how he would wield federal power. In online videos and stump speeches, Trump is pledging to pick up where his first term left off and push even further.

Where he earlier changed border policies to reduce refugees and people seeking asylum, he’s now promising to conduct an unprecedented deportation operation. Where he previously moved to make it easier to fire federal workers, he’s now proposing a new civil service exam. After urging state and local officials to take harsher measures on crime and homelessness, Trump says he is now determined to take more direct federal action.

“In 2016, I declared I am your voice,” Trump said in a speech last month at the Conservative Political Action Conference and repeated at his first 2024 campaign rally in Waco a few weeks later. “Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”

Gym Jacket Off Jordan & Clarence...welcome to another round of "Spot The Hypocrisy"

Huff Post Headline:

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Invited To Testify About Ethics Before Senate

Republicans are urging Roberts not to accept the Democrats' invitation, arguing that the Supreme Court is able to police itself.

SO...the SCOTUS can "police itself," but Alvin Bragg needs Gym Jacket Off Jordan to police Manhattan? Did I get that right?

McCarthy: Give a millionaire a fish, he eats today. So let's give millioniares a fish every day.

ACCOKEEK, Md. (AP) — President Joe Biden lambasted Republicans’ emerging trade-off plans to raise the nation’s debt limit only in exchange for spending cuts and other policy concessions on Wednesday, declaring that GOP lawmakers are threatening a historic default on U.S. obligations “unless I agree to all these wacko notions they have.”

*****
“Folks, that’s the MAGA economic agenda: Spending cuts for working- and middle-class folks ... with tax cuts for those at the top of the pile,” Biden said, referring to former President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, Make America Great Again. “It’s not about fiscal discipline. It’s about cutting benefits for folks ... they don’t seem to care much about.”

Commenting in kind, McCarthy said, “President Biden is skipping town to deliver a speech in Maryland rather than sitting down to address the debt ceiling.” He also insisted that House Republicans were the ones acting responsibly by insisting on reining in the federal government’s spending habits.

“If you gave your child a credit card and they kept maxing out the limit, you wouldn’t blindly raise the limit. You’d change their behavior,” McCarthy said. “The same is true with our national debt.”

Kev repays Gaetz for his Speaker vote by slipping his Medicaid work requirements into ceiling bill

Work or die': Kevin McCarthy sneaks Matt Gaetz's Medicaid plan into debt ceiling bill

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) appears to have granted a request from Rep. Matt Gaetz to include work requirements for Medicaid in a bill that would raise the nation's debt limit.

*****

The bill filed by McCarthy would force non-disabled adults receiving Medicaid to work 80 hours a month if they were not parents or primary caregivers.

"The individual works 80 hours or more per month, or has a monthly income that is at least equal to the Federal minimum wage under section 6 of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, multiplied by 80 hours," one condition in the bill states.

*****
"Kevin McCarthy's "debt ceiling" bill? It would also fundamentally change Medicaid into a 'work or die' program," attorney Matthew Cortland wrote on Twitter. "I am alive because of #Medicaid; I will do everything I can to defend the people who rely on the program against this GOP attack."

Accused rapist "would like to" appear in court for defamation trial, but...traffic

Trump seeks to avoid appearing at civil trial over rape claims due to 'traffic' concerns

Trump's attorneys have reportedly claimed in court documents that, although he would like to appear in court to face a civil defamation suit from a woman he has denied raping decades ago, he might stay away as much as possible because of traffic and related travel concerns associated with the arrival of the former president.

Joseph Tacopina, Trump's attorney, wrote to a judge that Trump was merely trying to save New Yorkers from experiencing traffic jams, blocked streets, and other nuisances that marked Trump's arraignment visit, according to the New York Times. Trump's attorney was previously scolded by U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan on Tuesday after the lawyer reportedly asked questions about an anonymous jury.

The trial is set to begin on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Lower Manhattan, according to the New York Times report:

"But Mr. Tacopina noted that when Trump appeared in the nearby Manhattan State Supreme Court for his recent arraignment on unrelated criminal charges, Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive was shut down for a significant period while Mr. Trump traveled to the courthouse. Streets within a three-block radius of the court were blocked off while he was there, and he was constantly accompanied by about a dozen Secret Service agents," the report says.

Since taking a time-out from DU, I find I can no longer post images...

...in the past, I'd right-click on an image, copy the info, post it here, voila...image in my post.

Now, I do the same, and nothing.

Here is some right-click code for an image I tried to post earlier. Any ideas on what changed?

?id=32338876&width=1200&height=778

It doesn't work if I use the whole line, or if I trim the text after the .jpg file extension.

I'd welcome anyone's thoughts on this. I used to include an image in the vast majority of posts I wrote here.

"He declared thermonuclear war on a cartoon mouse"

Scott Maxwell: DeSantis threatens Disney with prison. The wheels have come off

Donald Trump is pounding on him like a bass drum. Donors are running away. And most mainstream Americans are either confused by or put off by his constant culture-warring.

See, your average American doesn’t believe Mickey and Minnie are trying to turn preschoolers gay or that the Main Street Electrical Parade is a covert Pride operation. They’re not obsessed with drag queens. And they’re not keen on book bans.

Over the weekend, Republican megadonor Thomas Peterffy told the Financial Times he was reconsidering his support for DeSantis saying: “I have put myself on hold. Because of his stance on abortion and book banning ... myself, and a bunch of friends, are holding our powder dry.”

See, DeSantis was billed as a less chaotic version of Donald Trump. Instead, he declared thermonuclear war on a cartoon mouse.

So Dominion got half of the damages they sought, and Rupe walked away to lie another day. Go USA.

Live Updates: Fox News Settles Defamation Suit for $787.5 Million, Dominion Says

The settlement averts what would have been a landmark trial.

The judge in the Fox News defamation case said on Tuesday that the case was resolved, abruptly ending a long-running dispute over misinformation in the 2020 election just as a highly anticipated trial was about to begin.

It was a last-minute end to a case that began two years ago and after the disclosure of hundreds of thousands of pages of documents that peeled back the curtain on a media company that has long resisted outside scrutiny. The settlement included a $787.5 million payment from Fox, according to Justin Nelson, a lawyer for Dominion.

Imagine 65,000,000 Americans finding out they won't be getting Social Security benefits

McCarthy is trying to pull a "my way or the highway" play with Biden, but...if he can't come up with something Biden will sign (and the Dem majority in the Senate would approve), there is no "backup generator" if the power goes off on SS.

That means the 65,000,000 Americans receiving payments will be cut off.

Wonder how that will play across the country?
