DonViejo's JournalTrump Tax Cut Already In Trouble
October 1, 2017 at 8:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
Stan Collender: While they say they expect that some Democrats will support the tax cut, the decision to exclude them from the planning process the Big Six consisted of four congressional Republicans and two members of the Trump administration means that it is anything but bipartisan. Because of that, and given the lack of any economic imperative and the substantive problems with the proposed tax cut (especially that it would harm taxpayers in blue states), House and Senate Democrats are far less likely to support the plan in its current incarnation than Trump, Ryan and McConnell are hoping.
That will make every GOP vote critical to passing the Trump tax cut and, as of a last Friday, significantly large groups of Republicans in both houses of Congress had already made it clear that they could not vote for the plan as drafted. Without any Democrats supporting the bill, McConnell will only be able to lose two Republican senators and still pass the bill. As of last Friday, there were more than two who were expressing doubts about their support.

Johnson Says Health Care and Food Are 'Privileges'
October 1, 2017 at 11:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) told a group of high school students that they dont have a right to health care, food and shelter, WISN reports.
Said Johnson: I think its probably more of a privilege.
He added: Do you consider food a right? Do you consider clothing a right? Do you consider shelter a right? What we have as rights is life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Past that point, we have the right to freedom. Past that point is a limited resource that we have to use our opportunities given to us to afford those things.

We have a high school girl as president: GOP strategist ridicules valley girl Trump for whining on TwitterTOM BOGGIONI
01 OCT 2017 AT 12:01 ET
-snip-
While several left-leaning panelists went after Trump, conservative strategist Evan Siegfried was the most brutal.
The president is isolated and has an overblown sense of grievance. He feels he needs to be getting credit for things he shouldnt be getting credit for because he has very few accomplishments, Siegfried began. He is becoming isolated and congressional Republicans largely ignore him.
He has no real legislative track record, he has only executive orders to show for what hes done and he has a further divided nation, he added as he got warmed up.
At the same time when we look at what he was saying yesterday, it sounds like a valley girl, he remarked before adopting a teen girls voice. Oh, my god, theyre ingrates, why dont they appreciate me? We have a high school girl as president of the United States essentially, who is trying to make it all about him and his ego as opposed to the fact that 5 percent of the people in Puerto Rico dont have drinkable water. Ninety percent dont have cell service and only 5 percent have electric power
The optics are bad and deservedly so, but its now all about how people dont appreciate the very great things that are going on there, he concluded in disgust.

Mnuchin Won't Say How Trump Will Prove He Doesn't Benefit From Tax Plan
By ESME CRIBB Published OCTOBER 1, 2017 11:13 AM
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Sunday refused to explain how President Donald Trump will support his claim that he wont personally benefit from the outlined tax proposal the White House released last week.
How are Americans going to know if the President gets this benefit if he doesnt release his tax returns? George Stephanopoulos asked Mnuchin on ABC News This Week, referring to part of the proposed policy that would cut taxes on certain high-earning businesses that currently pay individual rates.
Thats just not fair, because, again, we havent published the rules as to whats going to apply to the pass-through rates, so youre making certain assumptions that I dont think are correct, Mnuchin replied.
I wouldnt need to make the assumptions if we had the Presidents tax returns, Stephanopoulos said. The President himself has said publicly hes not going to get a benefit from this tax plan. My question to you is, how are the American people going to know that if hes not releasing his tax returns?
I think the American public will be comfortable with the information they have, Mnuchin said. Were going to make sure that theres the proper rules. Theres going to be full transparency, as we go through the legislative process, what those rules are so that rich people cant take advantage of it.

Schumer: Trump needs to 'roll up his sleeves' on Puerto Rico instead of calling names
Source: The Hill
BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 10/01/17 11:16 AM EDT
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Sunday urged President Trump to get to work to help Puerto Rico instead of calling names.
"The president, instead of tweeting against the mayor of San Juan, who's watching her people die and just made a plea for help, [should] roll up his sleeves and get to work here," Schumer said on CBS's "Face The Nation."
"The bottom line is, at least for the first week-and-a-half, the effort has been slow-footed, disorganized and not adequate."
Schumer said other people have agreed that more needs to be done in Puerto Rico to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. "This has not been a good response," he said. "It needs the president to stop calling names...roll up his sleeves and get to work."

Trump to attend Presidents Cup golf tournament Sunday
President Trump updated his schedule on Sunday to attend the Presidents Cup Golf Tournament at Liberty National Golf Club.
Trump is scheduled to arrive at the course this afternoon and will participate in the trophy presentation at 6 p.m. Several former presidents attended the tournament this week, including former presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton.
Trump has spent the weekend at his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
He spoke with several current and former Puerto Rican officials Saturday to discuss relief efforts on the island following Hurricane Maria and received a briefing from Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long on federal recovery efforts in the U.S. territory.
Trump also faced criticism this weekend for slamming Puerto Rican officials, including San Juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, for their poor leadership during the crisis.

Ryan won't guarantee every middle class person will get a tax cut under Trump proposal
Source: The Hill
BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 10/01/17 11:07 AM EDT
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Sunday wouldn't guarantee that every middle class person would get a tax cut under President Trump's tax reform proposal.
"That's the purpose of doing this," Ryan said on CBS's "Face The Nation." "The purpose of this is to get a middle class tax cut."
Ryan was pressed on whether that was a guarantee that every middle class person would get a tax cut under the president's plan. "Well, I don't know every single person's little, small problem or issue," he said.
Ryan said the purpose of the tax reform plan is to lower middle class taxes. "So yes, people are going to get tax cuts. How big are those tax cuts? That depends on the individual," he said.

Fox Ignores NFL Players Kneeling During National Anthem During Live Broadcast
Source: Mediaite
by Colby Hall | 9:50 am, October 1st, 2017
Given the ongoing rhetorical debate between President Donald Trump and NFL players who are kneeling during the national anthem in protest of racial inequality, all eyes were on the pregame festivities at this mornings first NFL game played at Londons Wembley Stadium between the Dolphins and Saints.
The controversy has been a remarkably effective wedge issue for the Trump administration, who seem to have successfully made this a debate about patriotism (and to a lesser extent free speech), ignoring the stated reasons that Colin Kaepernick and others that have followed gave for kneeling: oppression of people of color in the United States.
Given the billion dollar relationship between the NFL and its broadcast partners (which include every major television broadcaster CBS, Disney/ABC/ESPN and Fox Broadcasting), one can reasonably wonder what discussions went on behind the scenes in trying to take some air out of this controversy, which many see puts the NFL in a tough position (which is ostensibly the hallmark of any effective protest, by the way).
So what happened? As you can see in the video above, Fox opened their broadcast of the national anthem showing arm-linked Saints kneeling, then standing for the national anthem. This appears to be confirmed in the following tweet from SB Nation:
