Trump demands do-or-die Friday vote on healthcare plan

Source: rawstory.com

U.S. President Donald Trump will get a second chance to try to close the deal with Republican lawmakers on dismantling Obamacare in a high-stakes vote on a new healthcare bill rescheduled for Friday.

After a week of calling Republican lawmakers and bringing them into the Oval Office for meetings, Trump was dealt a setback on Thursday when a vote on what was supposed to have been his first legislative victory had to be postponed because of opposition from two flanks in the party.

Conservatives felt the bill did not go far enough to repeal Obama’s namesake healthcare legislation, and moderates felt the plan could hurt their constituents.

House Republican leaders had signaled they were ready to work through the weekend to figure out a way to reconcile their differences. But Trump sent his top lieutenants to a dramatic meeting on Capitol Hill on Thursday night with a message: he was done talking.

Fact Check: Trump Misleads About The Timess Reporting on Surveillance

Source: nytimes

By LINDA QIU MARCH 23, 2017

WASHINGTON —..........................

Here’s an assessment of Mr. Trump’s references to The Times’s reporting.

Mr. Trump accused The Times of altering its headline.

“Here, headline, for the front page of The New York Times, ‘Wiretapped data used in inquiry of Trump aides.’ That’s a headline. Now they then dropped that headline, I never saw this until this morning. They then dropped that headline, and they used another headline without the word wiretap, but they did mean wiretap. Wiretapped data used in inquiry. Then changed after that, they probably didn’t like it. And they changed the title. They took the wiretap word out.”

False. Mr. Trump was referring to an article published online on Jan. 19 and in print on Jan. 20 that disclosed that American law enforcement and intelligence agencies were examining intercepted communications and financial transactions as part of a broad investigation into possible links between Russian officials and associates of Mr. Trump.

There were in fact two different headlines on the online and print versions of the article, which is typical. At no point was either headline altered.......................

................After all the negotiations, passage seemed, if anything, farther away. Some rank-and-file members balked at the removal of coverage and benefits their constituents depend on. The president scheduled a late-afternoon meeting at the White House with members of the centrist Tuesday Group.

“We’re certainly trying to get to ‘yes,’” said Representative Mark Meadows, Republican of North Carolina and the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus. “We’ve made very reasonable requests and we’re hopeful that those reasonable requests will be listened to and ultimately agreed to.”

As Mr. Trump pressed to persuade conservatives to support the measure, the changes he has incorporated have alienated some other Republicans who were already nervous about the bill. Those lawmakers have the potential to cost the bill vital support in the Senate.

“There’s a little bit of a balancing act,” Mr. Spicer conceded.

But he defended the removal of the so-called “essential health benefits” regulations, saying it would accomplish Mr. Trump’s stated goal of reducing health care costs.

“Part of the reason that premiums have spiked out of control is because under Obamacare, there were these mandated services that had to be included,” he said.............................

Sen. Pat Roberts apologizes for 'mammogram' line

Source: CNN

Updated 2:54 PM ET, Thu March 23, 2017

Story highlights

Republicans are considering scrapping 10 "essential benefits" in their repeal of Obamacare
Sen. Pat Roberts' description of why those benefits weren't essential landed him in hot water

(CNN)Sen. Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican, apologized Thursday afternoon for making an apparent joke about mammograms related to what features are or are not included in Republicans' plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"I deeply regret my comments on such an important topic," Roberts said in a statement. "I know several individuals whose lives have been saved by mammograms, and I recognize how essential they are to women's health. I never intended to indicate otherwise, and I apologize for my comments."

Roberts, who's known for employing a dry sense of humor, told a Talking Points Memo reporter earlier in the day: "I wouldn't want to lose my mammograms." ........................

9 bonkers things Donald Trump said in his new exclusive interview with Time[/

http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/3/23/15035286/trump-time-interview-lies

“I can’t be doing so badly, because I’m president, and you’re not.”

Updated by Matthew Yglesias

@mattyglesiasmatt@vox.com Mar 23, 2017, 12:36pm EDT

In an exclusive interview with Time’s Michael Scherer, published Thursday, President Donald Trump basically gives three types of explanations for why it’s okay for him to say things that aren’t true.

Trump thinks it’s okay to repeat a false claim as long as he is accurately stating the fact that someone else made the false claim. He thinks it’s okay to say something false as long as it later turns out that something vaguely similar is true. And he appears to think it’s okay to just straight-up lie and then keep lying for no reason.

Here are three quotes on category one misstatements, where Trump says he was accurately saying other people said something false, so there’s no reason for him to apologize for spreading misinformation:

“I’m just quoting the newspaper [about Ted Cruz’s father being involved in the JFK assassination], just like I quoted the judge the other day, Judge Napolitano, I quoted Judge Napolitano, just like I quoted Bret Baier, I mean Bret Baier mentioned the word wiretap.”
“Well, I’m not, well, I think, I’m not saying, I’m quoting, Michael, I’m quoting highly respected people and sources from major television networks.”
“Well if you look at the reporter, he wrote the story [about Muslims celebrating 9/11 on rooftops in New Jersey] in the Washington Post.”

Here are two quotes on category two misstatements where Trump says it’s okay to say something false, because something different would later happen that was kind of similar to the thing he falsely said earlier:

“Sweden. I make the statement, everyone goes crazy. The next day they have a massive riot, and death, and problems.”
“Because a wiretapping is, you know today it is different than wire tapping. It is just a good description. But wiretapping was in quotes. What I’m talking about is surveillance. And today, [House Intelligence Committee Chair] Devin Nunes just had a news conference.”

And here are four quotes..........................
