DES MOINES, Iowa — Hillary Clinton won the endorsement Friday of the woman behind federal legislation making it easier for women to challenge their employers over unequal pay.

Lilly Ledbetter, namesake of the first law President Obama signed in 2009, said Clinton is a "fierce and uncompromising champion for women, for basic fairness, and for opportunity for everyone."
........................

Ledbetter worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber for nearly two decades before learning that, as a rare woman in a senior supervisor role, she was making between $500 and $1,500 less each month than male counterparts. She sued, but the Supreme Court ruled against her because she had missed a short legal window to file a challenge. The 2009 law allowed lower paid workers, who are often women, to bring claims long after their pay is set.

"I was being paid significantly less for the same job — less than I deserved and less than my family needed," but didn't know it, Ledbetter wrote in an essay to be released by the Clinton campaign later Friday. A copy of Ledbetter's endorsement statement was provided by the Clinton campaign.

Clinton helped sponsor a law to negate the high court's ruling.

"Under this law, no one else will ever have to accept the gender discrimination I faced without the chance to challenge it in court," Ledbetter wrote...............

Why I’m supporting Hillary Clinton for president.

Jan 28, 2016 by Lilly Ledbetter

My story paved the way for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Together we can fulfill its promise.

When I became an overnight shift manager at the Goodyear plant in 1979, there weren’t many women on the job (and the few that didn’t stay long). But I worked my way up, and in 1996, I even received the plant’s “top performance award.”

It wasn’t until 19 years after I’d started that I learned I was being paid less than my male colleagues.

One evening, I came into work early, checked my mail, and there it was: an anonymous note that listed my salary and the salaries of three men with the same title. I was being paid significantly less for the same job—less than I deserved and less than my family needed.

The easiest thing to do would have been to let it go. But that’s not who I am.

I took my case all the way to the Supreme Court. But they ruled that, though I had clearly been discriminated against, I had filed my case too late to be compensated.
Luckily, we live in a country where, when the laws are wrong, we can do something about it.

Seven years ago today, President Obama signed his first bill into law: the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes it easier to challenge wage discrimination in court. It was an important step toward equal pay for women, and an important victory for the increasing number of American households where women are the primary breadwinner. Under this law, no one else will ever have to accept the gender discrimination I faced without the chance to challenge it in court.
20160128_blog_lilly1

But this isn’t just my story. It’s the story of women working full time across this country who, despite new protections, are on average still earning just 78 cents for every dollar a man earns—with women of color often being shortchanged even more. That’s money their families are losing out on.

Our next president can either build on the progress we’ve made and go even further—or dismiss this important issue. Women across this country need more than rhetoric; they need action—they need a fighter in the White House.

I firmly believe Hillary Clinton will be that fighter.

Hillary has spent decades fighting to advance women’s rights and economic opportunities. We fought side by side to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which she co-sponsored in the United States Senate, and she has been a tireless champion for the Paycheck Fairness Act—legislation that would go even further to address the pay gap. And she’s put issues like equal pay, affordable child care, paid leave, and reproductive rights front and center in her campaign.

Hillary understands that these issues can’t be dismissed or pushed to the sidelines. They’re not just “social issues”—they’re fundamental to our country’s economic future, and they are at the heart of everything she’s fighting for on this campaign. For Hillary, this is about more than politics—it’s personal. She just gets it, plain and simple.

Of all the candidates in this race, she is the one we can count on to be a fierce and uncompromising champion for women, for basic fairness, and for opportunity for everyone. She’s not just a steadfast supporter of issues that affect women’s lives; she’s someone who has been there. She doesn’t just say the right things; she does the right things. And when it comes to finally closing the gender pay gap once and for all, that will make a world of difference.

Advocacy Groups Call Foul on Sanders Campaign in Iowa, Nevada

Advocacy Groups Call Foul on Sanders Campaign in Iowa, Nevada

By Emily Cadei On 1/28/16 at 6:22 PM

Senator Bernie Sanders has built his insurgent presidential bid around being Mr. Clean, but several outside groups are now accusing his campaign of playing dirty.

Sanders’s campaign in Iowa has included League of Conservation Voters and AARP logos in recent mailers it’s sent to prospective caucusgoers, a subtle effort to tie himself to those groups, if not implying an endorsement. But neither group has backed him. The AARP, which represents retirees, does not endorse candidates, and the League of Conservative Voters, an environmental advocacy group, is supporting Sanders’s Democratic foe, Hillary Clinton.

And now news has broken of what is potentially an even more bald-faced deception, in Nevada, where Sanders supporters have reportedly been posing as members of Las Vegas’s powerful Culinary Workers Union Local 226 to try to rally labor support ahead of the state’s Democratic caucuses on February 20.

For a candidate who has boasted about not taking money from billionaires and never running a negative political ad in his life, the moves raise questions about the iconoclastic Vermont lawmaker’s campaign just days before the make-or-break Iowa caucuses......................

Sanders tries to bolster position against gun law he previously supported

Washington (CNN)Bernie Sanders will co-sponsor a bill to repeal legal protections for the firearm industry that he'd supported a decade ago, taking another step to undo the political damage of that vote and smooth over his relationship with gun

According to a release from the Brady Campaign, Sanders will co-sponsor the repeal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which protects gun manufacturers in lawsuits involving shootings. Sanders had voted in favor of the protections while in the Senate and has up to this point resisted reversing course on the issue.

The Brady Campaign says that Sanders decided to support the legislation "hours after meeting with Brady activists," and that his staff also met with victims of gun violence.

For Sanders, it's all an effort to undo the damage of a 2005 vote for a bill that protected gun manufacturers from lawsuits when their firearms are used in crimes. Then-New York Sen. Hillary Clinton opposed that bill, and has repeatedly pointed to Sanders' vote as evidence he was aligned with the National Rifle Association........

Major Nevada union accuses Sanders aides of posing as union members

Now Playing Sanders: Where was...

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN)Nevada's powerful Culinary Union on Thursday accused Bernie Sanders' campaign staffers of posing as union workers in an attempt to gain access to their members, a charge the Sanders campaign denies.

Union representatives said Thursday that multiple members of their union have reported Sanders' campaign staffers of "attempting and gaining access to employee dining rooms at Las Vegas Strip properties."

"We are disappointed and offended," said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, the union's secretary-treasurer. "It's completely inappropriate for any campaign to attempt to mislead Culinary Union members, especially at their place of work.".....................

WATCH Bernie Sanders Meets With President Obama Ahead of Iowa Caucuses

Most Americans expect that Hillary Clinton would prevail against her leading GOP opponent in November, while Bernie Sanders’ chances are rated less well. The thought of Donald Trump as president inspires high levels of public anxiety.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll also finds Americans divided about the need for a third party in this country – but not so divided about a potential independent run by Trump, should he fail to win the GOP nomination. Fewer than a quarter say they’d even consider voting for him as an independent candidate for president.

With Trump as the GOP nominee vs. Clinton, 54 percent of Americans say they’d expect Clinton to win; among registered voters (a more GOP-leaning group), Clinton has 52 percent support. Clinton’s seen by much wider margins as beating Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. Sanders, for his part, is seen as beating Cruz or Rubio – but potentially losing to Trump.

Gabby Giffords to Campaign With Hillary Clinton

by Monica Alba

DES MOINES, IOWA - ......................

Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, will appear at a rally with Clinton in Ames on Saturday and kick off a canvassing event later in the day, the campaign confirmed.

The couple became outspoken advocates for gun control after Giffords survived a shot to the head at a political event in Tucson five years ago. Two years later, they founded a superPAC called Americans for Responsible Solutions, just weeks weeks after a gunman killed 26 people—20 of them children—at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

This weekend, the pair will praise Clinton's record to prevent gun violence and dedication to "common sense" safety measures, according to an aide.

Giffords and Kelly endorsed Clinton earlier this month in a statement, saying: "Only one candidate for president has the determination and toughness to stand up to the corporate gun lobby - and the record to prove it. That candidate is Hillary Clinton."

They also praised Clinton for doing "what is right, not what is politically expedient." ........................
