Chicago mayor slams Ivanka Trump for 'misleading' tweets about the city's recent gun violence

Source: cnn

Updated 5:09 PM ET, Wed August 7, 2019

Washington (CNN)Chicago's Democratic mayor is pushing back against Ivanka Trump's "misleading" tweets about recent gun violence in the city, assailing President Donald Trump's daughter for getting several facts wrong.
..........................

On Tuesday, Ivanka Trump, who serves as a senior adviser to the President, highlighted the violence in a pair of tweets, writing, "As we grieve over the evil mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, let us not overlook that Chicago experienced its deadliest weekend of the year."

"With 7 dead and 52 wounded near a playground in the Windy City- and little national outrage or media coverage- we mustn't become numb to the violence faced by inner city communities every day," she wrote in one of the tweets.

At a press conference later Tuesday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot called out the tweets from Trump, describing them as "misleading" and suggesting the first daughter doesn't really care about the violence.

"It wasn't a playground, it was a park. It wasn't seven dead. It wasn't 52 wounded in one incident, which is what this suggests. And it's misleading," Lightfoot said. "It's important when we're talking about people's lives to actually get the facts correct, which one can easily do if you actually cared about getting it right.".....................................

A thumps up, grinning Trump. damn

Pondering Impeachment, House Sues Don McGahn, Ex-White House Counsel, for Testimony

Source: nytimes

By Nicholas Fandos and Charlie Savage Aug. 7, 2019

WASHINGTON — The House Judiciary Committee sued on Wednesday to force the former White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II to testify before Congress, asking a federal judge to strike down the Trump administration’s claim that top presidential aides are “absolutely immune” from its subpoenas.

In a filing in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the Judiciary Committee identified Mr. McGahn as “the most important witness, other than the president, to the key events” at the center of its investigation into possible obstruction of justice by President Trump — behavior detailed by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, that the committee said could warrant impeachment.

“The Judiciary Committee is now determining whether to recommend articles of impeachment against the president based on the obstructive conduct described by the special counsel,” the filing said. “But it cannot fulfill this most solemn constitutional responsibility without hearing testimony from a crucial witness to these events: former White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II.”

The House lawsuit signaled that more was at stake than the testimony of a single witness. It suggested that the Trump administration was seeking to establish a broad precedent shielding top presidential advisers from Congress, even those no longer working for the White House. And it urged the court to move quickly to preserve the House’s ability to consider impeachment before the current Congress ends in January 2021.............................

The body of El Paso shooting victim Elsa Mendoza de la Mora was returned to Mexico in a hearse that crossed the Puente Libre Bridge in Ciudad Juarez.

Mendoza was one of eight Mexican victims killed in Saturday's shooting at Walmart in El Paso, Texas. The shooting left 22 people dead and dozens others injured.

She was a teacher and director of an elementary school, CNN affiliate KTSM reported.

"Thank you very much to all the people who have been attentive to my family and me. I know my mother will get all that love that we share," her son Antonio posted to his Facebook page.

Trump tells O'Rourke to 'be quiet' in wake of El Paso shooting

Source: The Hill

By Brandon Conradis - 08/07/19 12:13 AM EDT

President Trump late Tuesday night responded to criticism from former Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas), who has repeatedly assailed the president following a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas.

"Beto (phony name to indicate Hispanic heritage) O’Rourke, who is embarrassed by my last visit to the Great State of Texas, where I trounced him, and is now even more embarrassed by polling at 1% in the Democrat Primary, should respect the victims & law enforcement — & be quiet!" Trump tweeted.

The president's remarks come shortly after O'Rourke, a 2020 presidential contender, announced he would be attending an event on Wednesday to pay tribute to the shooting victims and counter Trump's visit to the city.

"When President Trump comes to El Paso tomorrow, I will be joining our strong, beautiful, binational community at #ElPasoStrong. I hope to see you there," O'Rourke tweeted earlier Tuesday night.............................................

DOJ Sides With Trump In Effort To Block House From Investigating His Finances

Echoing arguments made by personal attorneys for President Trump, the Justice Department weighed in Tuesday on Trump’s side in his bid to halt a congressional probe of his finances.

Trump took the unprecedented step of hiring personal attorneys to try to halt a subpoena issued by the House Oversight Committee seeking financial records from his longtime accountant, Mazars USA LLP.

Accusing House Democrats of issuing “sweeping subpoenas purportedly justified by vague incantations of hypothetical legislative purposes,” DOJ attorneys argued in the Tuesday filing that the subpoena “raises significant separation-of-powers issues.”

The DOJ filing is the first time the Trump Administration has taken a position in court on the President’s bid to halt Congress’ investigations of himself. The Justice Department filed its brief after the DC appeals court asked it to during oral arguments in the case last month. The judges wondered aloud why the government had not taken a position on the matter.........................

Trump to be greeted in Dayton with protests, 'Baby Trump' blimp

By Owen Daugherty - 08/07/19 10:13 AM EDT

President Trump will be met with protests and the “Baby Trump” inflatable balloon when he visits Dayton, Ohio on Wednesday to meet victims' families and local leaders in the wake of a mass shooting that claimed nine lives.

Organizers raised enough money in recent days to have the 20-foot balloon transported from Chicago to Dayton before Trump arrives Wednesday, according to The Washington Post.

The balloon, depicting Trump as an angry baby in a diaper holding a cellphone, will be filled with air instead of helium.

The balloon will also be holding a sign that reads: “Welcome to Toledo Dayton! Don’t be a baby — Stand up to the NRA.” The word “Toledo” will be crossed out, a reference to Trump’s gaffe when mixed up the Ohio cities during a televised address Monday......
