Tyson wants fewer government inspectors in one of its beef plants. Food safety advocates are raising alarms.
Consumer advocates warn that the changes could threaten food safety by keeping red flags out of the sight of expert inspectors.

Aug. 14, 2019, 3:30 AM CDT By Suzy Khimm

Tyson, one of the country’s largest meatpackers, is petitioning the Trump administration to reduce the number of government inspectors at a Kansas beef plant — a proposal that has raised alarms among some consumer and food safety advocates, who fear the changes could jeopardize public health.

In the request, Tyson Fresh Meats proposes using its own employees, rather than independent Department of Agriculture inspectors, to take a first look at the meat being prepared at its factory in Holcomb, Kansas. Tyson’s employees would identify unsuitable beef carcasses and trim away defects, before USDA inspectors check every carcass that is allowed to go forward for disease and contamination, Tyson said in its March waiver proposal, which was obtained by the advocacy group Food and Water Watch through a Freedom of Information Act request. The shift would allow Tyson to speed up its factory line.

The USDA is considering Tyson’s request — the first of its kind for a beef plant — as part of a broader overhaul of beef inspections that aims to shift quality control from government inspectors to factory workers, while focusing the USDA’s attention on more targeted safety checks.

Consumer advocates warn that the changes could threaten food safety by keeping red flags out of the sight of expert inspectors. Dr. Pat Basu, the USDA’s former chief veterinarian, said that Tyson factory workers without adequate training might miss critical signs of disease, drug injections or bacterial contamination — and remove the evidence before USDA inspectors can examine the carcasses.
....................................

Tyson’s request comes as the Trump administration is finalizing a similar overhaul for pork plants, which will allow them to reduce the number of USDA inspectors by having factory workers take over more quality control tasks..................................

Good to see this. But it is a shame that we have to keep spending money because of Trump atrocities!!

NEW: Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Trump administration rule that could drastically curb legal immigration "will be swiftly challenged and defeated in the courts." (link: https://abcn.ws/2z86GnX) abcn.ws/2z86GnX

Critics vowed to challenge the regulation in court, charging that it unfairly penalizes low-income immigrants -- particularly those of color -- and warned it would stoke fear in immigrant communities.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra called the rule "vile" and an "attack on families and lower income communities of color."

"It will harm our communities, schools, and workplaces by weaponizing essential healthcare, housing, and nutrition programs," he said in a tweet. Becerra also said he is "ready to take legal action to protect the rights of all Californians."

Police release photo of Houston man who caused mall stampede

Aug 13, 2019, 11:56 AM ET

Police in Houston released an image of a suspect they say caused a stampede at a Houston-area mall on Sunday when he jumped onto a table in the food court and declared he was going to kill himself.

The picture tweeted out by the Houston Police Department early Tuesday shows the suspect appearing to be a young white male with blond hair wearing glasses and a green T-shirt.

Constable Ted Heap said during a police press conference over the weekend that the individual was at the Memorial City Mall when he "put on what appears to be a half mask … kind of a red mask, came down the escalators, came down to the food court, and then at a slow trot went through the food court. About halfway through the food court he jumped up on a table and declared that he was going to kill himself."

"Of course, at this point we had chaos. People started fleeing," Heap added.

The authorities said at the press conference that the picture of the suspect would be released after the criminal intelligence division had a chance to review it first.................

Portland, Oregon, braces for far-right rally, counterprotest

PORTLAND, Ore. — Aug 13, 2019, 12:44 PM ET

Portland police are mobilizing to prevent clashes between out-of-state far-right groups planning a rally here and the homegrown anti-fascists who oppose them as America's culture wars seep into this progressive haven.

Saturday's rally — and the violence it may bring — are a relatively new reality here, as an informal coalition of white nationalists, white supremacists and extreme-right militias hones its focus on Oregon's largest city as a stand-in for everything it feels is wrong with the U.S. At the top of that list are the masked and black-clad anti-fascists who turn out to violently oppose right-wing demonstrators as soon as they set foot in town.

"It's Portlandia, and in the public mind it represents everything these (far-right) groups are against," said Heidi Beirich, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups. "It's progressive, and even more offensive to them, it's progressive white people who should be on these guys' side."

The groups know they will get a headline-grabbing reaction from Portland's so-called "antifa," whose members have issued an online call to their followers to turn out to "defend Portland from a far-Right attack." Portland's Rose City Antifa, the nation's oldest active anti-fascist group, says violence against right-wing demonstrators is "exactly what should happen when the far-right attempts to invade our town."

Portland leaders are planning a major law enforcement presence on the heels of similar rallies in June and last summer that turned violent, and the recent hate-driven shooting in El Paso, Texas. None of the city's nearly 1,000 police officers will have the day off, and Portland will get help from the Oregon State Police and the FBI. Mayor Ted Wheeler has said he may ask Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, to call up the Oregon National Guard.

"There's no winning for the cops in a situation like this. There just isn't," Beirich said. "This is hard-core stuff, and I don't think you can be too cautious."

Experts who track right-wing militias and hate groups warn that the mix of people heading to Portland also came together for a Unite the Right rally in 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia, which ended when a participant rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one person and injuring 19.

The rally is being organized by a member of the Proud Boys, who have been designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. Others expected include members of the American Guard, the Three Percenters, the Oathkeepers and the Daily Stormers. American Guard is a white nationalist group, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, while the Three Percenters and the Oathkeepers are extremist anti-government militias. The Daily Stormers are neo-Nazis, according to the center...................

Trump's Push to Bring Back Jobs to U.S. Shows Limited Results

Source: nytimes

WASHINGTON — From tax cuts to relaxed regulations to tariffs, each of President Trump’s economic initiatives is based on a promise: to set off a wave of investment and bring back jobs that the president says the United States has lost to foreign countries.
Donald Trump wearing a suit and tie: The nonprofit Reshoring Initiative found fewer than 30,000 jobs that companies said they would relocate to the United States because of President Trump’s tariffs.© Anna Moneymaker/The New York Times The nonprofit Reshoring Initiative found fewer than 30,000 jobs that companies said they would relocate to the United States because of President Trump’s tariffs.

“We have the greatest companies anywhere in the world,” Mr. Trump said at the White House recently. “They’re all coming back now. They’re coming back to the United States.”

Mr. Trump’s tax cuts unquestionably stimulated the American economy in 2018, helping to push economic growth to 2.5 percent for the year and fueling an increase in manufacturing jobs. But statistics from the government and other sources do not support Mr. Trump’s claim about his policies’ effectiveness in drawing investment and jobs from abroad.

Foreign investment in the United States grew at a slower annual pace in the first two years of Mr. Trump’s tenure than during Barack Obama’s presidency, according to Commerce Department data released in July. Growth in business investment from all sources, foreign and domestic, accelerated briefly after Mr. Trump signed a $1.5 trillion tax-cut package in late 2017 but then slowed. Investment growth turned negative this spring, providing a drag on economic output.

In Mr. Trump’s first two years in office, companies announced plans to relocate just under 145,000 factory jobs to the United States, according to data and modeling by the Reshoring Initiative, a Washington nonprofit group. That is a record high in the group’s data, which dates back to the late 1980s, but it adds up to less than one month of average job gains in the United States in its decade-long expansion. More than half of those jobs — about 82,000 — were announced in 2017, before Mr. Trump’s tax cuts took effect.

Kamala Harris says Trump move on green cards part of effort to 'vilify a whole group of people'

Sen. Kamala Harris on Monday said the Trump administration's new regulation that makes it easier to reject green card and visa applications is part of an ongoing effort by President Donald Trump to "vilify" immigrants.

The Trump administration's new regulation, paired with last week's enforcement raids, attempts to limit legal immigration and crack down on illegal immigration. Under the regulation, any green card and visa applicants could be turned down if they have low incomes or little education, and have used benefits such as most forms of Medicaid food stamps and housing vouchers, because they'd be deemed more likely to need government assistance in the future.

The move could dramatically cut the number of legal immigrants allowed to enter and stay in the US.

Harris told CNN's Kyung Lah it is a part of an "ongoing campaign of his to vilify a whole group of people."

The California Democrat, who was wrapping up a campaign swing in Iowa, accused Trump of "criminalizing" innocent people.
