Anita Hill discussed the Me Too movement and made a reference to her own experience speaking out against sexual misconduct during her commencement speech at Wellesley College on Friday.
During her address, the law professor encouraged the graduating class to engage in inclusive and diverse environments and to “reject cynicism” ― despite a divisive and troubling political climate.
Hill also addressed the staggering statistics of sexual assault cases that go unreported.
“Unfortunately, sexual harassment, abuse and assault do not end with college days,” she said, noting a Department of Defense survey that revealed a spike in reports of sexual assault in the military in 2018.
“And yet, there are those who would have us believe that the stories and statistics, showing the prevalence of sexual misconduct are a hoax,” she later added. “They prefer to believe in their own myths, often misogynist, about the behavior.”
Hill then noted, “And despite the evidence, sexual misconduct deniers have friends in high places.” ......................................

The “Shake It Off” singer kicked off Pride Month by asking her fans to flood their senators with letters asking them to support the Equality Act.
Taylor Swift jumped back into the political arena with a bang on Friday.
The “Shake It Off” singer knocked President Donald Trump’s stance on LGBTQ issues as she launched a campaign aimed at convincing senators to support the Equality Act.
In a note on Twitter celebrating Pride Month, which starts Saturday, Swift acknowledged that while there was “so much to celebrate, we also have a great distance to go before everyone in this country is truly treated equally.”
The House’s recent passing of the Equality Act — to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination at work, home and school — was “excellent news,” she wrote. But it still has to come before the Senate.
So, Swift called on her fans to ask their senators to support the act ― and share their messages on social media with the #lettertomysenator hashtag.

Smoke from massive wildfires shrouds Canadian cities in eerie orange glow

Several wildfires are raging across Alberta, a western province in Canada, spewing large amounts of smoke into the atmosphere and shrouding Canadian cities, such as Calgary and Edmonton, and even sending smoke billowing into the northern United States airspace.
While there are several fires burning throughout the province, three major fires burning in the northern half of the province are the main focus.
The Chuckegg Creek wildfire is out of control and located about 3 miles (5 kilometers) south of the town of High Level, Alberta. This particular fire is about three times the size of the city of Edmonton, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson.
Officials estimate that about 10,000 people have been forced to evacuate in and around High Level as a result of the blaze..............................................
"The combination of prolonged, unseasonably warm weather and severe drought have encouraged the rapid spread of these fires. Typically, we do not see large fires like this so early in the season," Anderson said.

The highest-ranking official to defect from North Korea has called for Europeans to stop being an audience for the “child exploitation” in the country’s famous mass games.
Thae Yong-ho, the former deputy ambassador to the UK, who defected in 2016, said travel companies and tourists should boycott the cultural displays, which attract large numbers of visitors and social media viewings. He said North Korean children already faced appalling rates of malnutrition, brainwashing and forced labour and the displays were yet another act of cruelty.
Thae had earlier told the Oslo Freedom Forum in Norway: “Every year North Korea gives this mass gymnastic display. You should know that it means the children, aged from six to nine, cannot go to school for six months – it’s a forced exercise. And who are the audience for this? Europeans, and there are many European tour companies who organise trips. We should argue this with the European companies – these are inhumane displays.”

The torture camps and the “infrastructure of fear” effectively dampened any resistance, keeping the people “asleep”, said Thae, a process to which the brainwashing of nursery-age children – who are taught to bow to the portrait of Kim Jong-un – contributed.

Talking of having to see his son forced to work 15-hour days in rice fields during school holidays alongside his classmates, he said children were regularly used as “slave labour” and predicted it would be at least another decade before North Koreans began any real show of dissent that might topple the dictator Kim.

President Donald Trump’s self-promotional and self-congratulatory tweets recognizing – for his first time ever – LGBT Pride month are eliciting anger, hurt, and outrage from members of the LGBT community, activists, and supporters.
“As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation,” Trump’s tweets began.
Many are furious.
The head of HRC called it “gross hypocrisy.”...............................

According to recent polling out of Maine — as noted by Sun Journal journalist Steve Collins — the approval numbers for Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) have plummeted drastically since she cast one of the deciding votes for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh over the wishes of her constituents.
In a series of tweets, journalist Collins highlighted the embattled senator’s precipitous decline in popularity as she faces a 2020 re-election campaign that could see her ousted.
As the writer points out, “New Critical Insights poll finds @SenatorCollins losing ground in Maine. In same poll, she went from 58% approval last spring to 51% in the fall to 41% now. ”
In a continuing series of tweets, he compares the senator’s number with how other politicians are faring, including President Donald Trump, adding: “Only 34% of Maine voters approve of Donald Trump, down from 41% last fall.”

It's hard to hold the middle ground in politics anymore. Collins has the approval of 31% of Democrats in this poll, 46% of Republicans.

A former West Virginia official who lost her job in 2016 after she referred to then-first lady Michelle Obama as an “ape in heels” has been sentenced to 10 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to embezzling $18,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), funds that were intended to help flood victims.
Pamela Taylor, who served as the Clay County Development Corp. director, was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison and two months of house arrest, the local U.S. attorney’s office announced Thursday. She was also fined $10,000.
Taylor pleaded guilty in February to stealing more than $18,000 in relief benefits from the agency intended to help those whose homes were damaged by the 2016 floods that ravaged the state....................................
U.S. District Judge Irene Berger, an Obama appointee, presided over her sentencing hearing.
“There’s no such thing as a little bit of FEMA fraud. Taylor’s fraudulent scheme took FEMA dollars away from those who needed it the most,” U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart said in a statement, referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency...................................
