Dolphins who frequent Australia’s Tin Can Bay, a popular tourist spot, have taken to bringing “gifts” ashore, apparently missing the visitors who would normally be lined up to feed them before the coronavirus pandemic.

The pod of humpback dolphins has brought sponges, barnacle-covered bottles and fragments of coral to Queensland’s Barnacles Cafe & Dolphin Feeding in recent weeks, a volunteer told Australia’s 7News.

“Nothing surprises me with dolphins and their behavior anymore,” Barry McGovern, a dolphin expert and PhD student at University of Queensland, told the outlet. “They do everything - they use tools, they have culture, they have something similar to names in signature whistles."

“In all likelihood, they probably don’t miss humans per se," he added. "They probably miss a free meal and the routine."...................

(CNN)Former Vice President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee came close to matching the fundraising performance of President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in April, but the presumptive Democratic nominee remains in a deep financial hole as the general election shifts into full gear, new figures show.

Biden and the Democrats started May with about $100 million in cash reserves, according to filings Wednesday night with the Federal Election Commission. That's less than half the $255 million that Team Trump said it had remaining in the bank, the result of a massive fundraising operation the President has cultivated since entering the White House.

Biden and the DNC took in more than $60 million in April, nearly as much as the $61.7 million the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee said it raised over the month, as the coronavirus pandemic forced both candidates to suspend traditional face-to-face fundraising.

But Trump has built an aggressive apparatus to tap small-dollar contributions, and his campaign's new filings show that nearly half -- about 45% -- of donations from individuals last month came in amounts of $200 or less.

By comparison, small-dollar donations fueled about 37% of Biden's individual contributions in April...............................

Under pressure, Trump administration weighs extending National Guard deployments

Source: POLITICO

A plan to keep 40,000 troops on coronavirus duty through July awaits the president’s approval.

05/20/2020 08:46 PM EDT

Trump administration officials are preparing plans to extend the federal deployment of more than 40,000 National Guard members performing coronavirus relief work across the country, after scores of lawmakers moved to pressure President Donald Trump to keep the Guards in place past June.
..................
....................

White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley did not confirm or deny whether Trump planned to authorize an extension past the current cutoff date of June 24, saying that "We will continue monitoring the impact of coronavirus in the states and will work to ensure they are equipped to respond."

On Tuesday, POLITICO first reported on a recording of Trump administration officials discussing the June 24 cutoff, its implications for Guard members’ benefits and the hardship it would cause states grappling with the pandemic, particularly as they attempt to prevent new outbreaks by identifying and isolating people who’ve been exposed to possible infection.

After the report, multiple lawmakers wrote to Trump Wednesday warning that the pending June cutoff would endanger Americans who are currently relying on Guard members to deliver food to patients, run coronavirus testing sites, decontaminate infected nursing homes and perform other services that understaffed state health departments have been hard-pressed to do on their own.

In a letter first shared with POLITICO, Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) ..............

Global report: don’t count on vaccine, US scientist warns, as cases pass 5m (“Brazil reports nearly 20,000 infections in one day; Trump says he’ll stop taking hydroxychloroquine in two days; Lufthansa in rescue talks”)

Brazil Is The New Epicenter Of The Global Coronavirus Pandemic (“Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s denial and incompetence have led to a predictable surge in cases.” Trump’s doppelganger – extreme, incompetent, ignorant, etc.)

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Plunge in Response to Coronavirus Pandemic (“A new study finds that carbon dioxide emissions fell as much as 17 percent, but the annual 5 percent projected for this year won’t have a long-term climate effect.” But it does tend to indicate what we *could* do if we got serious.)

The number of Veterans Affairs patients who have died from coronavirus complications rose to more than 1,000 this weekend, even as the number of active cases of the illness within the department’s medical system continued to decline.

As of Monday morning, department officials had counted at least 1,012 patient fatalities from the fast-spreading illness. Along with veterans in VA medical care, that total includes some active-military personnel and other community members being cared for by VA hospitals.

It does not include 30 VA employees who have died from the illness.

More than 12,000 VA patients have contracted the COVID-19 virus since early March. That total has increased almost 11 percent in the last week alone.......................

CRUEL #Trump Screws National Guard #coronaVirus Workers Out Of GI Bill Credit

one thing not mentioned is that these Nat. Guard folks will have been separated from their families as they put in their service.

Trump Screws National Guard Virus Workers Out Of GI Bill Credit
With the knowledge that 90 days of service means the government would have to credit the National Guard's service, Trump is fine with terminating.

https://crooksandliars.com/2020/05/eye-2024-mike-pompeo-holds-elaborate

About the time you think there's no low too low, Trump finds a newer low. It's not enough to fire the State Department IG because Pompeo is a corrupt SOB, but he's also fired the transportation IG for looking into Mrs. Mitch McConnell's malfeasance and corruption. Yes, those things happened, but it wasn't enough.

You may recall that Donald Trump called out the National Guard to help with the virus response in areas that needed it. And now, it is time for their duty to end, and just in the nick of time, as Politico reports.

More than 40,000 National Guard members currently helping states test residents for the coronavirus and trace the spread of infections will face a “hard stop” on their deployments on June 24 — just one day shy of many members becoming eligible for key federal benefits, according to a senior FEMA official.

The official outlined the Trump administration’s plans on an interagency call on May 12, an audio version of which was obtained by POLITICO. The official also acknowledged during the call that the June 24 deadline means that thousands of members who first deployed in late March will find themselves with only 89 days of duty credit, one short of the 90-day threshold for qualifying for early retirement and education benefits under the Post-9/11 GI bill.

You read that right. The Trump administration has coldly calculated when those National Guard members who deployed to help our nation through a pandemic would accrue benefits, and cut them off with 24 hours to spare.

Previously, a Ford spokesperson said company policy requires that “everyone wears PPE to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

UPDATE: 4:53 p.m. ET ― Officials for Ford Motor Co. have backpedaled on a decree that President Donald Trump wear a mask when he visits a plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on Thursday, Bloomberg reported.

A company spokeswoman told the outlet Ford would defer to the White House’s own policies on mask-wearing.
