'People are scared': White House in disarray as members of Trump's inner circle exposed to COVID-19

Source: raw story

Published 1 min ago on May 10, 2020.........................

.....................

Speaking with hosts Victor Blackwell and Christi Paul, Homes stated that the news that CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield, Dr. Anthony Fauci and FDA Director Stephen Hahn have all gone into one form of quarantine or another after two White House staffers tested positive for the coronavirus has rocked staffers who are still coming in everyday during the health crisis.

“This is clearly not the narrative that the White House wants to have right now,” Holmes began. “Remember just last week, President Trump broke his self-isolation and went to Arizona. That trip was meant to really signal that the country was ready to reopen; we’ve seen states slowly working to reopen their different businesses. We know people are going back to work and that’s what the White House wanted to be talking about.”

“Now the narrative is completely different, it is people are scared, and it’s in the place where it’s essentially the safest place in the country arguably,” she continued. “People are still getting sick here. What does that say? And what does it say if three of the top doctors on the front line fighting this virus are now quarantining themselves for 14 days?”

“Why? Because they came into contact with someone who tested positive. Where? Here at the White House,” she explained. “So, it’s clearly a shift in narrative, what we are talking about. Will anything actually change? That’s the big question now. Well, on Friday, after the vice president’s press secretary tested positive, a memo went out to all staffers, essentially said that they were taking stronger measures to protect them, to prevent the spread of coronavirus. That meant heightened cleaning in high touch-point places. It also meant at some points they would be maintaining maximum staff teleworking. One thing that wasn’t mentioned, though, was masks.”

Sen. Ted Cruz gets hair cut at Dallas salon whose owner was jailed

Sen. Ted Cruz, the conservative Republican of Texas, got his hair cut Friday at the Dallas salon owned by a woman jailed for violating orders aimed at limiting the spread of the coronavirus.

Barbershops and hair salons were allowed to reopen Friday in Texas, although with six feet between work stations.

Cruz flew from Houston to get a cut at Salon à la Mode. Owner Shelley Luther was sentenced Tuesday to seven days in jail for staying open despite public health orders but was freed Thursday after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott eliminated jail for violating an order related to the coronavirus.

Luther's situation has been championed by some on the political right. Cruz, leaving the salon wearing a mask, said of his haircut "I think it's terrific," video from NBC Dallas-Fort Worth showed.

"I'm proud to stand with Shelley Luther and I'll tell you, what happened to her was wrong," Cruz said. "It was ridiculous to see somebody sentenced to seven days in jail for cutting hair. That's not right, that's not justice, that's not Texas."

Luther, also wearing a mask, said a visit by Cruz was "something that I would have never dreamed of" and "overwhelming in a great way."

Ex-Jared Kushner employee calls his COVID-19 bungling ‘painfully familiar’ in brutal op-ed

Former New York Observer chief editor Elizabeth Spiers, who worked under Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner for years, is not surprised at the way he has completely bungled his responsibilities in battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Writing in the Washington Post, Spiers reveals that Kushner's COVID-19 flubs fit the pattern of how he behaved when he was the owner of the New York Observer.

"This is basically Kushner's modus operandi, and it's painfully familiar to me because he was my boss," she writes. "When I knew him, he seemed constitutionally incapable of considering the humanity of other people as a starting point. Relationships were primarily transactional, and this failure of empathy permeated everything he did."

And even though Kushner so far has failed to solve Middle East peace or completely overhaul the federal government as he pledged to do, he has not paid any price for his constant screw ups.

"As of today, Kushner's string of failures have not resulted in any kind of demotion or reprimand, much less dismissal," Spiers explains. &quot Whatever happened to the Office of American Innovation? What has it done? Who's demanded results?) They act like they think they should get credit for any effort at all, for stooping to bother."

Trump Livid After California Allows Statewide Mail-In Voting: 'These Votes Must Not Count'

Source: TPM

May 9, 2020 1:57 p.m.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) issued an executive order on Friday allowing all voters in the state to vote by mail in the upcoming November elections to protect them from exposure to COVID-19 at polling sites.

Now a furious President Donald Trump is demanding that the votes be thrown out.

“So in California, the Democrats, who fought like crazy to get all mail in only ballots, and succeeded, have just opened a voting booth in the most Democrat area in the State,” he tweeted on Saturday. “They are trying to steal another election.”

“It’s all rigged out there,” Trump also wrote. “These votes must not count. SCAM!”

On the previous day, Newsom ordered all California county elections officials to send registered voters mail-in ballots for the elections on November 3 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Golden State is the first in the country to do so.

“Elections and the right to vote are foundational to our democracy,” the governor stated in a press release. “No Californian should be forced to risk their health in order to exercise their right to vote.”...................

By Aaron C. Davis May 9, 2020 at 11:06 a.m. CDT

It was Jan. 22, a day after the first case of covid-19 was detected in the United States, and orders were pouring into Michael Bowen’s company outside Fort Worth, some from as far away as Hong Kong.

Bowen’s medical supply company, Prestige Ameritech, could ramp up production to make an additional 1.7 million N95 masks a week. He viewed the shrinking domestic production of medical masks as a national security issue, though, and he wanted to give the federal government first dibs.

“We still have four like-new N95 manufacturing lines,” Bowen wrote that day in an email to top administrators in the Department of Health and Human Services. “Reactivating these machines would be very difficult and very expensive but could be achieved in a dire situation.”

But communications over several days with senior agency officials — including Robert Kadlec, the assistant secretary for preparedness and emergency response — left Bowen with the clear impression that there was little immediate interest in his offer.

“I don’t believe we as an government are anywhere near answering those questions for you yet,” Laura Wolf, director of the agency’s Division of Critical Infrastructure Protection, responded that same day.

Bowen persisted.

“We are the last major domestic mask company,” he wrote on Jan. 23. “My phones are ringing now, so I don’t ‘need’ government business. I’m just letting you know that I can help you preserve our infrastructure if things ever get really bad. I’m a patriot first, businessman second.”........................

Trump’s Tantrum Helped The Lincoln Project Put Coronavirus Ad On The Air In Three Swing States

It turns out that Donald Trump is the best fundraising tool the Lincoln Project could have hoped for, according to a new report from The Washington Post.

The report notes that after the president’s tantrum over the conservative group’s ‘Mourning in America’ ad, which has now gone viral, millions of dollars from tens of thousands of donors poured in from across the country.

The ad that got under Trump’s thin skin cost only $10,000 to produce and another $5,000 to air on Fox New in the Washington market, which is why the president saw it.

More via The Washington Post:

The group’s ad, called “Mourning in America,” criticizes Trump’s handling of the pandemic, focusing on the skyrocketing unemployment rate and death toll. “If we have another four years like this, will there even be an America?” asks the narrator.

After the group spent just $10,000 to produce the commercial and $5,000 to run it in the Washington market on Fox News, the ad went viral. On Thursday, Joe Biden’s campaign released a new ad with a similar message and tone.

Within days, the Lincoln Project received about $2 million from 25,000 new donors — money it is now using to air the spot in three battleground states, super-PAC officials said.

Report: Ivanka Trump's Personal Assistant Tests Positive For COVID-19

Source: TPM

May 9, 2020 10:39 a.m.

A personal assistant to Ivanka Trump, who is President Donald Trump’s daughter and a top White House adviser, has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

According to CNN, the assistant had been tested out of caution and was found to have the virus, though she did not exhibit any symptoms.

An unnamed source told CNN that she has not been near Trump in recent weeks. Trump and Jared Kushner, her husband and a fellow White House senior adviser, took tests for COVID-19 on Friday, which both came up negative.

At least 85 kids across U.S. have developed rare, mysterious COVID-19-linked illness

At least 85 kids across U.S. have developed rare, mysterious COVID-19-linked illness

While severe cases of the coronavirus have largely spared children, evidence is growing that kids may not be as immune to COVID-19 complications as previously thought.

May 7, 2020, 5:43 PM CDT By Erika Edwards

Children with a rare but potentially dangerous complication thought to be linked to the coronavirus have now been identified in at least seven states and the Washington, D.C., area.

Doctors say the increase does not necessarily suggest that the number of such cases has grown. Instead, they say, it is likely the result of increased awareness of the problem, which just this week got an official name: pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome.

.............................

May 7, 202002:04

.................................

"All the kids have some sort of severe inflammation," said Dr. Michael Bell, head of critical care medicine at Children's National Hospital. "I think it's all part of some spectrum of disease that's evolving as we learn more and more about this infection and its consequences."

The newly identified syndrome appears to be the result of a child's immune system's going into overdrive after a COVID-19 infection. However, it's still too soon to pin all of the cases on the coronavirus. Some patients have tested negative.

"We're all still waiting for the smoking gun to be sure it is associated with COVID-19," said Dr. Audrey John, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, adding that it's "certainly suspicious."

..............................

Children can have high fevers, severe diarrhea, rash and often red eyes or conjunctivitis. But "the feature that's been most concerning is that they have problems with their heart function," John said.

"The heart isn't squeezing as well as it should, so they need medications to help keep their blood pressure up," John said.

Screenings Were Porous as Trump Spurred Exodus From Virus Hot Spots

Source: nytimes

A House report found that Americans fleeing Asia and Europe to beat the president’s travel bans faced few temperature checks or other rigorous screenings to see if they were bringing the virus home.

May 7, 2020 Updated 7:04 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s go-to defense of his early response to the coronavirus is his decision to close down travel from China, the virus’s original epicenter, and then from ravaged Europe.

But those hasty decisions led to exoduses of American citizens, with packed, chaotic airports and, according to a new congressional report, porous screenings for passengers who could have been bringing the coronavirus home with them.

Medical officials on contract from the Department of Homeland Security checked the temperature of just 10 percent of more than 250,000 travelers at U.S. airports arriving from travel-restricted countries during a 10-week span from January to March, according to a report released Thursday by the House Oversight and Reform Committee, undercutting one of the centerpieces of Mr. Trump’s argument that his administration responded aggressively to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.

If customs officers noticed symptoms among travelers returning from restricted countries, they referred them to the medical officials on contract stationed at the airport.

But out of more than 250,000 travelers those medical officials screened, just under 1,500 were given a third screening by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials between Jan. 17 and March 29. And C.D.C. officials were the ones primarily determining whether a traveler displaying symptoms needed to be federally quarantined.
Latest Updates: Coronavirus Outbreak in the U.S.

Trump’s travel restrictions led to an exodus from hot spots — and little rigorous screening in U.S. airports.
Latinos in many places are disproportionately affected by the virus.
A report paints a scathing picture of a New Jersey nursing home.

Homeland security officials from the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office told the committee that the informal policy was to check one of every 10 passengers because they “don’t want to slow things down,” according to the report.....................................................
