Vanquish the Virus? Australia and New Zealand Aim to Show the Way

The two countries, led by ideological opposites, are converging on an extraordinary goal: eliminating the virus. Their nonpolitical approach is restoring trust in democracy.

SYDNEY, Australia — Thousands of miles from President Trump’s combative news briefings, a conservative leader in Australia and a progressive prime minister in New Zealand are steadily guiding their countries toward a rapid suppression of the coronavirus outbreak.

Both nations are now reporting just a handful of new infections each day, down from hundreds in March, and they are converging toward an extraordinary goal: completely eliminating the virus from their island nations.

Whether they get to zero or not, what Australia and New Zealand have already accomplished is a remarkable cause for hope. Scott Morrison of Australia, a conservative Christian, and Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s darling of the left, are both succeeding with throwback democracy — in which partisanship recedes, experts lead, and quiet coordination matters more than firing up the base.

“This is certainly distinct from the United States,” said Dr. Peter Collignon, a physician and professor of microbiology at the Australian National University who has worked for the World Health Organization. “Here it’s not a time for politics. This is a time for looking at the data and saying let’s do what makes the most sense.”

The dreamy prospect of near normalcy, with the virus defeated, crowds gathering in pubs and every child back in school, is hard to imagine for much of the United States, where testing shortages and a delayed response by Mr. Trump have led to surges of contagion and death.

And it may end up being a mirage or temporary triumph in Australia and New Zealand. Elimination means reducing infections to zero in a geographic area with continued measures to control any new outbreak, and that may require extended travel bans. Other places that seemed to be keeping the virus at bay, such as China, Hong Kong and Singapore, have seen it rebound, usually with infections imported from overseas.

And yet, if there are any two countries that could pull off a clear if hermetically sealed victory — offering a model of recovery that elevates competence over ego and restores some confidence in democratic government — it may be these two Pacific neighbors with their sparsely populated islands, history of pragmatism and underdogs’ craving for recognition..............................

..............“It’s a case of politicians just not being in the way,” said Ian Mackay, an virologist at the University of Queensland who has been involved in response planning for the pandemic. “It’s a mix of things, but I think it comes down to taking advice based on expertise.”

The results are undeniable: Australia and New Zealand have squashed the curve. Australia, a nation of 25 million people that had been on track for 153,000 cases by Easter, has recorded a total of 6,67
0 infections and 78 deaths. It has a daily growth rate of less than 1 percent, with per capita testing among the highest in the world......................

Trump Organization Seeking Aid From U.K., Ireland For Golf Resorts

Donald Trump’s dual roles as a president and a private businessman with his hand out to foreign governments raise ethics concerns.

In yet another mind-blowing business situation for an American president, Donald Trump’s company is seeking handouts from foreign governments for three struggling golf resorts.

The Trump Organization is after aid from the British and Irish governments to cover most of the wages of employees who have been furloughed because of COVID-19 lockdowns, Bloomberg reports.

Ironically, the 2,000 Trump employees laid off in his own country won’t get the same government help.

The situation raises huge ethical concerns for a president. The Trump Organization stands to gain from foreign governments at the same time Trump negotiates with them on international issues as head of the U.S. The dual role as businessman and president highlights concerns about whose interests he is serving. Fordham University law professor Jed Shugerman called it a “flagrant violation” of the emoluments clause of the Constitution, which prohibits American officials from accepting money from a foreign government or its representatives to avoid conflicts of interest.....................................

Virtual rallies on social media show support for 'Safer at Home' order

Source: nbc

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV)-- People across Wisconsin are taking to social media to voice their support for the 'Safer at Home' order on Saturday, in bright contrast to the 1,500-person anti-stay-at-home rally at the Capitol the day before.

Starting this weekend, the "Safer at Home Rally" Facebook group is asking residents to post to social media to show solidarity for the stay-at-home order, which requires people to maintain strict social distancing in order to flatten the COVID-19 curve.

"Over the last week we’ve watched protesters take to the streets, endangering lives and threatening to strain our healthcare system, and as a result we’ve also watched a lot of family, friends, and healthcare workers face feelings of defeat," according to the 'Safer at Home Rally' group.

"We may not be able to take our voices to the streets, but we can take them to social media," according to the group.

Supporters are using a series of hashtags to promote their virtual protest, including #SupportSaferAtHomeWI, #SupportGovEvers, #WIFlattenTheCurve and #SaferAtHome.

Meanwhile, another Facebook group called "We Support Gov. Evers and COVID 19 Safer at Home Order" has attracted thousands of followers and is urging supporters to post uplifting and encouraging messages to social media that promote the 'Safer at Home' order as well as essential workers fighting COVID-19 on the front lines..................................

I had not heard of these virtual groups. (but I do not use facebook ).
I wonder if other states are doing this. Seems like a good counter protest to the anti stay at home protesters.

Hundreds of people demonstrating against the Evers administration’s safer-at-home order gathered outside the Wisconsin Capitol on Friday, ignoring social distancing recommendations and crowding together on the steps of the state Capitol.

There were lots of American flags and anti-Evers signs. Some people were sporting Trump gear and signs.

Republican Group Asks Americans A Critical Question In Scathing Anti-Trump Ad

Source: huff post

George Conway’s Lincoln Project and fellow anti-Trump group Republicans for the Rule of Law released spots attacking the president on the same day.

Two conservative groups that are working to defeat Donald Trump in the 2020 election released online ads Friday attacking the president’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lincoln Project, of which conservative attorney George Conway (the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway) is a prominent member, released this video asking which kind of American its viewers would like to be ― one, like Trump, who demands, or one who makes sacrifices.

Check out the ad here:

Republicans for the Rule of Law, meanwhile, shared a minute-long video of Trump musing during Thursday’s task force briefing about injecting disinfectant to combat the virus. Trump claimed Friday he was being sarcastic.

“50,000 people have died. This is our president,” read the text at the start of the clip. It ended with the words: “Unfit. Unwell. Unacceptable.”..................................

McConnell Refuses Funds For Blue States As His Kentucky Is 2nd Most Dependent On Federal Cash

https://www.politicususa.com/2020/04/23/mitch-mcconnell-slams-blue-states-as-his-kentucky-is-2nd-most-dependant-on-federal-cash.html

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to give virus hit blue states aid, but his state of Kentucky is the second most dependent on federal funds.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo hammered McConnell for his state taking $148 billion more federal dollars than they put in.

It turns out that McConnell’s home state is one of the most dependant on federal funds in the entire country.

Via WKUFM:

Kentucky is ranked the second most federally dependent state in the nation.

A recent study by WalletHub looked at two key factors: state government dependency and resident dependency. Kentucky’s government is ranked fourth in dependency on federal money but is only ranked 23rd in the share of federal jobs.

….

Gonzalez said federal funding makes up about 40 percent of Kentucky’s revenue, the 4th highest rate in the country

Mitch McConnell is in no position to deny states their own money back. Blue states have been economically carrying red states for decades, so McConnell’s grandstanding about states needing to make up their own revenue shortfalls without federal help doesn’t hold much water when it is taken into the context with the fact that McConnell is the Senate’s second-biggest welfare queen. .......................

Forty people in Milwaukee County may have become infected with the coronavirus as a result of participating in Wisconsin elections on April 7.

Milwaukee Health Commissioner Jeanette Kowalik says data is still being analyzed to show the connection between more people that may have contracted COVID-19 due to election activities, like being a poll worker or voting in person, earlier this month. Kowalik hopes the data will be finalized by May 1.

Wisconsin’s April 7 elections consisted of local races and the presidential primary. Approximately 400,000 people voted in person............
