Washington (CNN)Can't get a new witness? Call Donald J. Trump.
Republicans might be blocking new testimony in the Senate trial but Democratic impeachment managers keep returning to the person who makes their case better than anyone: the President himself.
Trump, of course, is not literally in the Senate chamber -- though he said Wednesday he'd "love" to be in the front row to stare at his "corrupt" accusers.
But for Democrats, there's no better evidence with which to paint a picture of what they say is a self-dealing, obstructive leader with a kingly view of his own powers than the highlight reel already compiled by the most television-obsessed president in history.
"I have, in Article II, where I have the right to do whatever I want as President," Trump says in one clip aired on Tuesday by lead impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California....................
................So Schiff dug out the famous clip from the 2016 election when Trump called on Russia, "if you are listening," to find Hillary Clinton's 30,000 "missing" emails. Last year's call by the President for China to "start an investigation into the Bidens" also came up, as did Trump's comment to George Stephanopoulos on ABC News that if a foreign power had election dirt: "I think I'd want to hear it."......................

Susan Collins sent note to dais before John Roberts admonished legal teams, source says

Washington (CNN)Sen. Susan Collins sent a written note early Wednesday morning during President Donald Trump's impeachment trial minutes before Chief Justice John Roberts admonished both legal teams, a source with knowledge of the event tells CNN.
It is unclear if the note from Collins, a Maine Republican, led directly to Roberts' comments, or had specific language for him, but the note came shortly before the chief justice spoke. The note was sent as House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from New York, spoke and appeared to accuse senators of a "cover-up."
Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough was seen on TV cameras speaking to Roberts at 12:48 a.m. ET. It is not clear what the conversation between the two was about, but Roberts addressed the Senate at 12:55 a.m.
There were also heated language from one of the President's attorneys, Pat Cipollone, in the preceding 30 minutes, and Roberts specifically addressed both legal teams in his remarks.
"I think it is appropriate at this point for me to admonish both the House managers and the President's counsel, in equal terms, to remember that they are addressing the world's greatest deliberative body," Roberts said, appearing to refer to notes on the dais.
The Supreme Court's public information officer did not comment.
Collins was reluctant to acknowledge any contribution to the remark
able rebuke of the parties arguing the impeachment trial. When she came off the floor about 2 a.m. ET Wednesday, a reporter told her that she was seen handing a note up to the dais, to the parliamentarian, she replied coyly: "Who me? I did that?" ..............................
Trump's lawyers are also on trial
We can only hope that trumps lawyers end up in the brig just like his past lawyers have done.
Trumps lawyers are also on trial
The president's impeachment trial has revealed a common Trump theme: The lawyers he brings in to defend his behavior end up in their own legal morass.

Theyve been accused of orchestrating a criminal conspiracy. Theyve been dubbed ethically compromised. Theyve been labeled liars. They could even be called to testify in the impeachment case they were hired to combat.
In the opening days of Donald Trumps Senate trial, it has at times felt like the presidents lawyers are his co-defendants.
Nonsense, said Jay Sekulow, the longest-serving personal attorney to Trump, when asked about the litany of allegations flying around Capitol Hill.
Welcome to impeachment in the Trump era, where the president cheers on his attorneys as they blow right past any suggestion that they themselves were direct witnesses if not culpable in a scheme that helped make their client Americas third chief executive to be impeached.
Its a theme that has been replayed throughout Trumps life: The lawyers he brings in to authorize and defend his behavior end up in their own legal morass. Trumps longtime legal fixer, Michael Cohen, is doing three years in federal prison for his election-season role in paying off women who alleged affairs with Trump. Former White House counsel Don McGahn ended up as a star witness for special counsel Robert Mueller after he had a front-row seat to Trumps potential obstruction of justice. Rudy Giuliani has hired a team of criminal defense attorneys as the Justice Department investigates his recent behavior while serving as personal counsel to the president.
For now, Trumps current attorneys appear to be embracing their role as supporting actors in a drama that will play out on the Senate floor for another week if not longer, sparring frequently with their Democratic investigators and leaving Chief Justice John Roberts to decide just how many more times hell need to serve as the chief of the Senates decorum police..............................................
Florida Republicans fast-track abortion restrictions
Source: politico
Updated 01/22/2020 06:09 PM EST
TALLAHASSEE Florida lawmakers are fast tracking legislation to restrict abortion, pushing to deliver a victory to the Republican base in a presidential election year.
On the 47th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, a state Senate panel on Wednesday voted along party lines to approve a bill that would require a teenager seeking an abortion to obtain the notarized written consent of a parent or guardian, or a waiver from a judge. The measure would expose a doctor or nurse who fails to resuscitate a child born alive to third-degree felony charges and up to five years in jail.
The measure is written in away that could allow Florida lawmakers to attach a more far-reaching anti-abortion measure as the bill advances.
President Donald Trumps second term could be won or lost in Florida, and the Republican-led Legislature this year is pushing to deliver to its Republican base before the general election in November.
...........
.............
Its clear that were no longer discussing parental consent. Weve devolved into the discussion of a bill that is a full-on assault to a womans right to choose and a physicians duty to care for his or her patient, state Sen. Lauren Book (D-Plantation), a panel member, told POLITICO after the Senate committee on Wednesday.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would beat President Donald Trump in the popular vote by nine points, according to a head-to-head match-up surveyed in a new CNN poll. Tied with former Vice President Joe Biden, this represents the highest margin of victory of any candidate measured in CNN's poll.
Released Wednesday, the survey found that registered voters currently prefer Bloomberg to Trump by 52 percent to 43 percent. Biden earned a similar nine-point spread in the survey.
Senator Bernie Sanders topped Trump by seven points, followed by Senator Elizabeth Warren with a five-point margin, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg with a four-point margin and Senator Amy Klobuchar with a three-point margin.

Bloomberg's lead is among his most significant polling achievements to date. However, the former mayor faces greater skepticism from members of his own party, whom he must court in order to first clinch the nomination.
Bloomberg performs similarly well in other head-to-head trials as well. A SurveyUSA poll released Tuesday found that he would best Trump by seven points, also in a tie with Biden. However, Sanders placed first in this poll with a nine-point advantage.
And news of the former mayor's perceived success against Trump might snowball into further advantages for him in the Democratic primary. CNN's survey found that 57 percent of Democratic voters believe the party should nominate someone with a strong chance of beating the incumbent president, the highest share to back this approach since June 2019............................

Trump Brags About Concealing Impeachment Evidence: 'We Have All the Material, They Don't'

The president says impeachment is going well and that he has been watching from Davos
President Trump said hes happy with the way the impeachment trial is going thus far because his administration has not released materials that would hurt his cause.
When we released that conversation all hell broke out with the Democrats, Trump said. Because they said, Wait a minute, this is much different than [what Adam Schiff] told us.
The president continued, So, were doing very well. I got to watch [the impeachment trial] enough. I thought our team did a very good job. But honestly, we have all the material. They dont have the material..........................
When asked about the impeachment trial, Trump initially spoke about what he usually refers to as the perfect call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In that phone conversation, on July 25, 2019, Trump reportedly asked Zelensky to investigate the Bidens eight times...........................

Giuliani says he was 'misled' by Parnas
Source: the hill
By John Bowden - 01/21/20 07:40 AM EST
President Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani said Monday evening that he had been "misled" by Lev Parnas, a close associate who has accused him of conducting an effort to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden in Ukraine.
In an interview with Fox News's Laura Ingraham, Giuliani asserted that Parnas has made "so many" "misrepresentations" of the facts surrounding Trump's efforts to convince Ukraine's president to open a criminal investigation into Biden, a leading Democratic presidential candidate, and his son Hunter.
"Lev is someone ... I was close to," Giuliani said. "Obviously, I was misled by him. I feel very bad."
"Im not going to respond to him for each and every one of the misrepresentations hes made, because there are so many. If Im called as a witness, Im prepared to do it," he continued.
....................
Giuliani and allies of the president have asserted that Trump's intention was to fight corruption in Kyiv.
Parnas, however, has claimed in recent interviews that the efforts were meant to find compromising information for the Trump campaign and investigate an unfounded claim that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 election.
