Lindsey Graham trashes Rand Paul and Mike Lee for criticizing Trump's Iran briefing: 'You're empower

On Wednesday, following intense criticism of the intelligence briefing on the Iran strike by Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rand Paul (R-KY), Lindsey Graham (R-SC) shot back at them ferociously when asked about their concerns by CNN congressional reporter Manu Raju — and accused them of “empowering the enemy.”

“I think they’re overreacting,” he said. “I’m going to let people know … to play this game with the War Powers Act, which I believe is unconstitutional, is that whether you mean to or not, you’re empowering the enemy.”

Trump asks NATO allies for help with Iran after years of bashing the alliance

Source: raw story

......................................

Trump announced that he would impose more sanctions on Iran. He said he believed that Iran would not resort to further aggressive action for the time being. He blamed his predecessor President Barack Obama for having concluded the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and for having dealt too gently with the country.

Trump also extolled U.S. military power, which he claimed had been much improved during his presidency. He said he would not hesitate to make use of this awesome technology, if necessary.

“Our missiles are big and powerful and accurate … and lethal,” he said. .................................

................The British have 1,400 troops in Iraq and Syria for both training purposes and for fighting the Islamic State. They are uneasy about the increased danger to their military personnel since Trump’s airstrike on Soleimani which was not coordinated with London or NATO headquarters.

London also believes that the 2015 nuclear deal ought to be given another chance. Re-engagement with Iran rather than pursuing a war path is also the conviction in the U.K.. In fact this continues to be the shared view of diplomats from the U.K., Germany, France, China and Russia. ..................................................................

Footage appearing to show Ukrainian passenger jet crashing broadcast on Iran state TV – video

A Ukrainian airliner with 180 people on board has crashed soon after taking off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport. Rescue teams have been sent to an area near the airport where the Boeing 737-800 belonging to Ukraine International Airlines crashed. The plane, bound for Kiev, suffered technical difficulties shortly after take-off. News of the crash broke just hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack targeting US troops at airbases in neighbouring Iraq

Fox News Cuts Away From Mike Lee: White House Iran Briefing 'Worst I've Ever Seen'

Source: Crooks and Liars

Senator Mike Lee was incensed about how the White House approached their explanation of why they provoked Iran, and Fox News was apparently afraid to broadcast it.

Fox News cut away from Mike Lee and Rand Paul's press conference where both of them had steam coming out of their ears after they were briefed on the events in Iran over the past week or so.

At one point, Lee was practically huffing and puffing as he told reporters:

I had hoped and expected to see more information outlining the moral and legal justification. The briefing lasted only 75 minutes whereupon our briefers left. This is not the biggest problem I had with the briefing, which I might add is the worst briefing I've seen, at least on a military issue, in the nine years I've served on the United States Senate. What I found so distressing about the briefing is one of the messages we received from the briefers was "do not discuss, do not debate the issue of appropriateness of further military intervention against Iran and if so, you'll be emboldening Iran." The idea we would be less safe by having a debate or discussion about the appropriateness of further military involvement.

Fox News cut away from it as soon as they could so as not to alienate Dear Leader. Here's what Fox News viewers got to see:.................................................

When College Republicans Unite With The Alt-Right, What Could Go Wrong?

When College Republicans Unite With The Alt-Right, What Could Go Wrong?
What could go wrong? Well, everything. A case study from the University of Washington.

Between the Inauguration Day riot and the affirmative-action bake sale, there has been nothing ordinary about the University of Washington’s College Republicans chapter for the past three years. Under the direction of Chevy Swanson, the chapter president elected in fall of 2016, the organization had sponsored a range of activities—two of which became near-riots, the first of which included a near-fatal shooting—that created public-safety issues and inflamed outrage, while alt-right activists and white nationalists swirled around the pugnacious scene it created on the UW campus.

It all finally came to a head this fall when the school’s administration announced it had withdrawn recognition of the group and was shifting its affiliation to a new group, called the Husky College Republicans, headed by Swanson’s onetime rival for the chapter presidency.

That should have ended the matter. However, as things turned out, that was just the start of the problems for Swanson and his former cohorts, now embroiled in a court case arising from threats Swanson made online.

UW’s experience with an unusually alt-right-friendly “College Republicans” chapter somewhat mirrors that of the chapter on the other side of the state at Washington State University in Pullman. There, the leadership of white nationalist James Allsup, who participated in the deadly Aug. 12, 2017, “Unite the Right” rally in Charlotteville, Virginia, created an uproar both before and after he was forced out, and later stripped of credentials within a Spokane County GOP committee.

Other campuses around the country are encountering similar turmoil within the ranks of their local Republican activists. At the University of Maine, for example, the campus College Republicans chapter was left in limbo after their official advisor resigned suddenly in the wake of the group’s decision to invite Michelle Malkin to speak on campus—a protest of Malkin’s recent embrace of the white-nationalist alt-right in the growing internecine battle between more establishment conservatives and far-right “Groypers.”

Campus conservatives have been splitting into pro-Trump and establishment factions for a while now, but the emergence of the alt-right faction as a campus phenomenon has intensified over the past year. In the case of UW’s College Republicans, moreover, the rising influence of the alt-right has created problems since the Trump election.

On the day of Trump’s inauguration—January 20, 2017—the chapter hosted a speaking event by alt-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos at UW’s Kane Hall that attracted a large crowd of protesters who clashed violently with attendees. Before the night was over, a Milo fan had shot and nearly killed an antifascist trying to prevent her husband from using pepper spray on the crowd.....................

Destruction and desperation are among the stirring sights captured in photos from Australia where one of the worst bushfire seasons on record continues to ravage wide swaths of the continent, taking homes, buildings and dozens of human lives with it.

The wildfires, fueled by drought and record high temperatures, have consumed an area twice the size of the U.S. state of Maryland, according to this week’s latest figures. Within that destruction, 2,000 homes have been lost and 25 people killed. The number of animals killed is estimated as more than one billion.

Here are a few images capturing the ongoing struggle and rescue efforts.

Justice Department Backs GOP Effort To Block Equal Rights Amendment

Source: huff post

01/08/2020 01:08 pm ET Updated 4 hours ago

The war over women’s equality is just getting going, and it’s going to be bruising with the Trump administration already signaling its stand against the ERA.

UPDATE ― 6:06 p.m. EST Wednesday: The Trump administration’s Department of Justice made it clear that it opposes the Equal Rights Amendment.

There’s a constitutional showdown heating up over equal rights for women, somehow still a contentious issue in 2020.

That’s because the Equal Rights Amendment, which passed Congress in 1972 and would amend the Constitution to give women equal standing under the law, is on the verge of ratification. Within the next few weeks, Virginia is expected to become the 38th state to ratify the ERA, clearing the Constitutional threshold for ratification, which is three-fourths of the states.

Already, Republicans are in court trying to block the ERA’s inclusion in the Constitution. At the end of December, three GOP attorneys general filed a suit in a federal court in Alabama to block the ERA’s ratification, arguing that it’s not constitutional.

On Tuesday, activists at the women’s rights group Equal Means Equal and the young women’s group Yellow Roses filed a lawsuit in Massachusetts federal court, seeking to make sure the amendment makes its way into the Constitution after Virginia ratifies, pushing back on the arguments in the GOP lawsuit.................
