US News & World Report: Trump's Economic Hustle

In the latest attempt to initiate his campaign's long-promised "pivot" to the general election, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump delivered an address before the Detroit Economic Club on Monday that was equal parts conservative pablum, distortion and conspiracy theorizing. But hey, at least he didn't insult a new ethnic group, so I imagine some folks are going to score it as a very presidential moment for him.
...
The policy content of the telepromptered speech was warmed-over Republican orthodoxy: tax cuts, deregulation and an insistence that any effort to combat climate change be subverted. Yes, Trump harped on his anti-trade message that doesn't fit with whatever's left of today's GOP – and threw in a line on a child care tax deduction that actually won't help many of the people who need it most – but otherwise there was surely enough standard-issue GOP fare here to warm the cockles of House Speaker Paul Ryan's heart.

He layered on top of that some of his favorite lies: That Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton called for raising taxes on the middle class (she didn't); that regulation is costing the economy $2 trillion per year (it's not); and that Obamacare will kill some 2 million jobs if it remains the law of the land (it won't). And then he threw in some conspiracy fearmongering about the official Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs numbers, one of his favorite ridiculous theories.
...
Donald Trump's big economic policy speech was no pivot, just pre-prepared fabrications and conspiracies.

How Putin Weaponized Wikileaks to Influence the Election of an American President

Cybersecurity company FireEye first discovered APT 29 in 2014 and was quick to point out a clear Kremlin connection. “We suspect the Russian government sponsors the group because of the organizations it targets and the data it steals. Additionally, APT 29 appeared to cease operations on Russian holidays, and their work hours seem to align with the UTC +3 time zone, which contains cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg,” they wrote in their report on the group. Other U.S. officials have said that the group looks like it has sponsorship from the Russian government due in large part to the level of sophistication behind the group’s attacks.

Other security firms offered independent analysis and reached the same conclusion. The group Fidelis undertook their own investigation and found Crowdstrike to be correct.

A Twitter user named @PwnAlltheThings looked at the metadata on the docs that Guccifer 2.0 provided in his blog post and found literal Russian signatures.
Motherboard reporter Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai actually conversed with Guccifer 2.0 over Twitter. The hacker, who claimed to be Romanian, answered questions in short sentences that “were filled with mistakes according to several Romanian native speakers,” Bicchieri found.

A large body of evidence suggests that Guccifer 2.0 is a smokescreen that the actual culprits employed to hide their involvement in the breach.

Under pressure from Bernie Sanders, Democrats poised to change how they pick nominees

Source: LATimes.com

The final deal approved by the rules committee on Saturday will create a commission that will draft changes to the superdelegate system. Only elected officials would be allowed to be superdelegates, reducing their numbers by two-thirds.

"We have to hang together, or we might hang separately," said Arthur Cheliotes, a labor leader and Sanders delegate from New York.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), who had resisted changes to the superdelegate system earlier in the day, also supported the amendment.

African American members of Congress have often argued to leave the system in place because it helps give minorities a greater voice in the nomination process.

Ex-DOJ Spox: Comey Broke Rules With 'Outrageous' Presser On Clinton Emails

A former Justice Department spokesman under former Attorney General Eric Holder called FBI Director James Comey's press conference announcing he would not recommend charges against Hillary Clinton over her email servers "absolutely outrageous."

In a series of posts on Twitter, Matthew Miller said the FBI and DOJ are "supposed to speak in court," not press conferences.

Miller also tweeted the presser was symptomatic of Clinton yet again getting "worse treatment than anyone else would."

He also suggested that Comey's announcement violated DOJ rules about disclosing information about ongoing investigations.

Slate: "Bernie Blew It"

Sanders wasn’t going to be the Democratic nominee, but he still held a good amount of leverage in the form of his voters. After a tough primary, they were hesitant to back Clinton, a fact apparent in the polls. Clinton stood ahead of Donald Trump, but not by much: Her lead was weakened by the party’s unbridged divisions. By holding off on a concession and an endorsement, the Vermont senator was keeping this leverage in reserve ahead of the Democratic National Convention. It made sense.

Still, it was a risky move. Whatever influence or leverage Sanders had was tied to his voters. As long as they stuck with him—and didn’t move to Clinton—he could make demands and win concessions on items like the Democratic Party’s platform, a key object of his rhetoric over the past month. But if his voters moved without his endorsement, either pushed by fear of Trump or support from other Democrats, then the value of his support would fall accordingly.

Which is what happened. In his nonconcession speech, Sanders told supporters their “major political task” was to “make certain that Donald Trump is defeated and defeated badly.” It turns out that was the message that landed.

In the most recent poll from ABC News and the Washington Post, Clinton leads Trump 51 percent to 39 percent, expanding her previous lead by 5 points, as Trump has seen a complete collapse in his support. And what’s driving the move toward Clinton? Democrats and independents who supported Bernie Sanders. In May, 20 percent of Sanders supporters said they would back Trump over Clinton in the general election. In June, that number is down to 8 percent. Overall, 81 percent of Sanders backers have rallied to Clinton, surpassing the 74 percent of Clinton supporters in 2008 who fell in behind Barack Obama. By any measure, the Democratic Party is unified.

Shark population off Huntington Beach increases dramatically

“I’ve seen more white sharks this year than I have in the previous 30,” said Lt. Claude Panis of the Huntington Beach Fire Department’s Marine Safety Division.

Prior to 2015, authorities never had to keep the public out of the waters off Huntington Beach because of shark activity. Since then, however, there have been three closures, including one earlier this month after several large sharks were seen in the water about 150 yards off of the coast.
...
A woman swimming off Newport Beach was bitten by a shark on Memorial Day and survived. While it’s unclear what species bit the woman, Lowe said it was most likely an adult great white over 10 feet long, based on the severity and size of the swimmer’s wounds.
