Lori Lightfoot, Toni Preckwinkle and Bill Daley out to early lead in Chicago mayor's race

Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot, former U.S. Commerce Secretary Bill Daley and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle jumped out in a narrow three-way battle in the first round of the Chicago mayor’s race Tuesday night, as a record 14 candidates fought to advance in an election that drew near record low turnout.

With votes scarcer than expected and polls showing a half-dozen or more candidates within striking distance, the goal was to break into the top two and qualify for the April 2 runoff election. That is the result if no candidate collects more than 50 percent of the vote the first time around.

Unofficial results showed Lightfoot with 17.4 percent of the vote, Preckwinkle with 15.6 percent and Daley with 14.8 percent with 66 percent of precincts counted. They were trailed by businessman Willie Wilson with 10 percent, state comptroller Susana Mendoza with 9 percent, Southwest Side attorney Jerry Joyce with 7 percent, activist and policy consultant Amara Enyia with 7 percent and former CPS board president Gery Chico with 6 percent.

The remaining six candidates, former CPS CEO Paul Vallas, former police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, state Rep. LaShawn Ford, former Ald. Bob Fioretti, tech entrepreneur Neal Sales-Griffin, attorney John Kozlar each had collected less than 6 percent.

Top Democrats Mull Social Media Non-Aggression Pact

Democratic Party chairs in the four early presidential states are working to convince the 2020 presidential candidates to avoid waging social media disinformation warfare against each other.

The effort began this week with a letter to state party chairs across the country broadly laying out the issue with an ultimate goal of establishing what amounts to a non-aggression pact, according to a copy of the letter obtained by POLITICO.

“We would like your support in recommending the ASDC [Association of State Democratic Committees] work towards developing a collaborative approach to battling disinformation, illicit campaign tactics, bots, trollfarms, fake accounts, altered text, audio, and video, any and all inauthentic speech in our Presidential Primary process," wrote the four chairs, including New Hampshire's Ray Buckley, Iowa's Troy Price, South Carolina's Trav Robertson and Nevada's William McCurdy.

"The Association of State Democratic Committees, the Democratic National Committee and the Presidential campaigns can and must work together in preventing the pollution of our discourse."

The letter continues: "Further, we want the campaigns to commit to report illicit activity they uncover to social media platforms, and when necessary, to law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security."

Biden's Family Is Urging Him to Run in 2020

NEWARK, Del. — Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said Tuesday that there’s “a consensus” in his family that he should run for president, but Mr. Biden said he did not want to embark on “a fool’s errand” and was still deliberating about whether to enter the race for the Democratic nomination.

“The most important people in my life want me to run,” Mr. Biden said, disclosing that he had a family meeting this month, which included his grandchildren, to discuss whether he should mount what would be his third presidential bid.

In the most detailed and unvarnished accounting yet of his thinking, the former vice president outlined a series of concerns about running. They included whether he would be able to garner enough money and support, and the nastiness of the campaign he predicted President Trump would run against whomever Democrats nominate.

“It would be the greatest honor of my life to be president of the United States, but it’s also something I have to make sure I could run a first-rate effort to do this,” he said.

It is not clear that Mr. Biden planned to speak, at least at such length, about the possibility of running. He was appearing before about 300 people at the University of Delaware to celebrate the naming of the Joseph R. Biden Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration. And he sat on stage for a conversation with the historian Jon Meacham about Mr. Meacham’s book, “The Soul of America,” which examines how the country overcame periods of division and turmoil.

Sanders Town Hall Finished Third in Ratings

CNN's Town Hall featuring Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) delivered 1.4 million total viewers for the network, finishing third in its 8:00 p.m. timeslot behind Fox News and MSNBC Monday night, according to Nielsen Media Research.

In total viewers, Fox News Channel's "Tucker Carlson Tonight" delivered 2.964 million viewers at 8:00 p.m. ET to finish first in the timeslot, followed by "All In With Chris Hayes" with 1.784 million.

In the 25-54 demographic that advertisers covet most, Fox's Carlson registered 561,000 viewers, followed by CNN's Town Hall with 511,000 and MSNBC's Hayes with 326,000.

The Sanders event fared better from a ratings perspective than previous Town Halls the network has offered up in primetime in recent weeks, but was well behind a January event featuring Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) who drew nearly two million viewers.
